Hey guys I have access to a 5 axis machining center and I can't think of what kind of part I want to machine. Give me suggestions on the kind of custom work u would like to make for your CR or R.maybe I can make multiples. after it's surfaced and programmed it ain't that bad to pump out a few of them. | ||

Adjustable rearsets come to mind. Lot of R&D work, but if you could basically just duplicate the OEM unit with several options for mounting a rigid peg like the link below it would be a nice start... http://www.EBRacing.com/shop/product108.html | ||

Steering head upper clamps, including stanchions for mounting standard, 7/8" handlebars. You can even machine "windows" in them, for all the f*gs out there who are obsessed with that trendy new fashion statement :-) | ||

Howz about a thicker/tougher stator side cover. They make super-beefy side covers for Gixxers etc that go on race bikes -- why not fashion one for "us" with beefier outer struts and a large threaded inset, into which a large black delryn puck could be placed. (like double the size of the pegasus piece there now. If done well, this would make left side crashes a zero-fluid-loss sort of thing.  | ||

I know it's not something that would require a 5d mill, but how about start and clutch covers along the lines of carbon ones available at e-b-r? Think they would look nice all polished up. | ||

I know, I know... A much lighter weight rear pulley for these 1125r bikes. Make it from Mg or T6 Alum. Problem will be finding someone who can engineer the piece so that it has the same load handling as the cast one, but saves all the weight. | ||

Or how about a "wing" shaped turn signal instead of the awful factory bug eye stalks?  Hardest part would be cutting the channel in the inside to run the wires and the LEDs... Don't mind the PS chop job - I did it quickly during my morning break today... | ||

How about an alternative to the tail section? Something skeletal that just holds the seat pad and ancillary stuff. | ||

How about all the plastic covers around the belt drive that would be cool. Only options I've seen are black carbon fiber witch would be cool if they came in blue or red, so aluminum would look great on all colors. | ||

As long as we're dreaming and you're taking suggestions, what about something that duplicated the HeliBar top triple clamp for the XB's? I have one on mine and would love to see something that would be for the 1125's since the fork tube spacing is different. It lifts the bars up and pulls them back as well by pulling them back tighter to the centerline of the steering head. | ||

The dmg machine in that video is the same one I have but unfortanatly I do not have simeltanius capabilities, i'm starting off kinda of small compared to some of the suggestions but I'll post some pics soon as I have something. Thanks for all cool ideas! | ||

Paul - While everyone keeps talking about parts that most ANY standard two axis, CNC mill will make, try this - Design some tooling, get with Erik and start doing some cylinder head porting. Start with just clean up type work, then move to better ports for the bigger engines. I know he's got a shop or two he's currently working with...but...! Put the machine to good use. Port work would be much better than covers or do-dads for the "bling" crowd. More monetary return also... Mike (Message edited by 1_mike on March 02, 2011) | ||

ADJUSTABLE CAM SPROCKETS. Critical for race engine tuning, Small and should be relatively simple. CNC BILLET FRAME SLIDERS. Aluminum base machined to match frame contour. Replaceable puck would be machined from Teflon or Derlin to match contour of base and frame. Puck would help absorb initial impact, relatively large base would dissipate energy to greater frame area, minimizing/preventing frame damage. Could add crush zone for greater protection in needed. Base held to frame with high strength velcro like knee sliders to facilitate easy repair/replacement. Low cost alternative would be machined entirely out of Derlin. Can you work from a DXF 3D CAD file? | ||

Howz about a thicker/tougher stator side cover. A refinement might be to not make the entire cover, but a large puck that matches the contour and diameter of the case and is attached using the existing puck holes. The "Puck" could be backed with HD visco foam to absorb and dissipate energy across the entire case structure, not just a small spot in the center as is done currently. Replacement would be simply popping off the damaged one and popping on a new one. Case removal not necessary. | ||

Paul - with all the issues concerning heat.... a) Heatsink for the voltage regulator- thin enough to bolt to the back side of the VR and frame extend into the "scoop" on the body work - maybe 3/8" thick, some fins milled into a plate that is in a "diamond" in shape b) want to really exercise those axis???- look at front wheel/brake on the new 1190 - build some brake caliper scoops or at least a mold and make some F'glass parts to fit the 1125 - need to bolt to/clamp to the fork leg and be out in the "clean air" | ||

I agree about making a replacement cover out of aluminum for the plastic engine pulley cover that has a skeletal look. I can imagine what it would look like and could probably draw one, but have no form of making one. Kicka666--I have the freespirits rear sets, i absolutely love them. Kind of pain to put on though. | ||

+/- 1 or 2 tooth belt pulleys? Chain guys do sprocket changes why souldn't we? I know it doesn't utilize the 5 axis but its still a nice to have. The head porting option caught my attention... | ||

OOh, good idea. I'd like sliders that replace the passenger peg MOUNTS, though - wide enough to protect bodywork if needed, but don't hang waaaay down at the end of the brackets. Put 'em on with the 2 bolts that hold the big V mount to the tail section, and keep the slider tight to the bodywork. Maybe. |
