I stopped to pick up some coffee beans the other day (Not *$ thank you). When I came out there was an older guy sitting near my bike. When I walked up he asked me about the motor. We talked for a while and he seemed pretty knowledgeable about Buells.

Turns out he was Italian - as in moved here from Italy - he was looking for a bike for a short guy and H-D wasn't doing it for him. He liked the way Ducatis looked but he said there was no way he was going to buy an Italian bike because there are to "fussy" and problematic.

He's probably going to get an XB.

An Italian that didn't trust Italian bikes..

You did say he was an "older guy", he probably remembers the days when their electrics were so bad you couldn't trust the bike.... Or when the "top hat" bearings seized on the clutch pushrod so often it boiled the clutch fluid..

They've been pretty good for a number of years now but bad reputations take a long time to die..

Unfortunately, image seems to have more influence than substance. What people perceive seems to carry more weight than reality. Ducati has taken on the image of being the motorcycle version of Ferrari, and people hold this as a status symbol. Unfortunately for Buell, it would be compared more to the motorcycle equivalent of Edsel. Despite imaginative and forward thinking engineering, it just was not accepted by the general public. The few people that saw the beauty in it tend to be very passionate about it, but the majority missed it. If you could get somebody that is "high profile" or "trendy" to show up someplace very public on a Buell you would see a change in status.

i freaking love being the lone Buell in the parking lot. I love NOT being the 10th Gixxer in the parking lot. This has alot to do with personality. Actually, it has EVERYTHING to do with personality. If you are worried about what squids think of you, maybe you should be out riding and not in that Starbucks parking lot. LOL

They may look down on Buells, but the vast majority of them look as my ass as it gets smaller in the distance after I pass them when the roads get twisty.

That's the ultimate trump card, boys.

PS--most people in the "know" will give cred based on what the tires look like, not what bike a guy rides.

Funny, the 1125 electronics are Italian, with many parts of it made by Ducati : )

Azxb9r >Ducati has taken on the image of being the motorcycle version of Ferrari. +1.

I always thought of the 1125's as the motorcycle version of a Corvette.
Pretty darn nice and when you put all the goodies on an inexpensive contender...

The "Ducati is the Ferrari of Motorcycles" is just plain stupid. Ducati riders would like to believe that but most guys on a new Ducati are just trying to compensate anyway.

If Ducatis clearly outclassed a standard motorcycle that costs less, then you might be able to make that analogy but the fact of the matter is,t he performance of a bike that costs half as much is on par with the Ducati.

There is more to a bike than just raw performance. The new Multistrada is the nicest bike I have ever ridden. Tons of tech, fantastic design, everything was perfect on that bike. It is clear as day why that bike costs twice as much as a run of the mill GSXR1k. Hell, I could easily argue it out classes my fathers $30k Screaming Eagle Geezerglide.

I have yet to experience any negativity regarding my R. Most people have never heard of Buell but when the ask what type of bike it is, they generally leave with a kind word or two.

Froggy, I wouldn't really compare a Multi to a Gixxer. However on several road tests, several cycle mags have given the nod to the C14 over the Multi. That's not to say it is a bad bike but the doodads that make up the extra cost don't work out to an equal increase in performance.

I am in no way to trying to diminish the capabilities of Ducatis but they simply aren't outclassing the competition in the same way Ferrari is.

funny that you make that comparo rat, having ridden both a multistrada and a C14. i felt the kawi was better in just about every aspect except handling. the kawi is a heavy pig but damn that thing is fast and smooth. the duc was jerky down low, hard to stay smooth, not as bad as say the 1125's were at first but it is noticeable.

>>> the kawi was better in just about every aspect except handling.

Kind of a major factor, idn't it?

For me it's looks, handling, performance, ease of maintenance, durability, no particular order. The Hypermotard is one of the best looking bikes I've seen. My Cyclone and Uly are too. : ]

yes blake, but really with some tweaks to the kawi suspension it could be a non issue. looks for subjective. my opinion was based purely on jumping on the multi for about 50 miles and having ridden a concours for several hundred miles. i just liked the kaw better.

i do know that spark plugs are a pain in the rear to put it lightly on the kaw, not sure how they are on the Duc

CR is not ugly and it would punch you in the mouth if you said that to it's face! The CR is the meanest looking bike around. It's the bulldog of motorcycles.

My last bike was an 06 Multi and I really liked it.The problem was there is not a Ducati dealer in the state of Arkansas and the maintenance was fairly expensive.I took it to Houston with me and had the first major service done a couple of miles early and had to turn around and go back because the service light came on and was told they couldn't reset it until it came on.Anyway, one of the first things I did when I got Peggy was take a heat gun to the Buell emblems on the air box.I just thought they looked kind of cheesy. Now people that don't know what she is usually come up and ask me about it and it usually goes well.I let my buddy ride it while in Nevada and after his wife asked about it she said,"I didn't know Harley made them Japslapper bikes."We just about died laughing.Another guy asked me if I had seen that guy riding around on that Ducati in town.I told him it was me: )I don't care anyway.I love my bike and usually ride alone.Just sent off for a new personalized tag that says SOLO.

Laverda was the brand referred to as the Ferrari of motorcycles--not Ducati! Buell 1125s and 1190s can be referred to as Cobras and GT40s, respectively, IMHO!

That's how I remember it, too, Mick.
As my late, great pal Joseph Glydon used to say, "Ducati is the Fiat of motorcycles." He was trying to ruffle the Ducatisti's feathers, of course, but there is still just a BIT of truth there...

Are your bars 4 way adjustable - lol - mine are, and modified, and comfey - same height as the CR but up angled instead of down - for comfort - the Crossroad rear-sets have your legs at the same height and angle as the CR - so the body positions are similar as well.

Obviously, you guys don't ride enough, if you can compare a steering wheel to handlebars - lol - really - did you read what I said? Totally different situation - one just looks good, the other is about real life functionality - if you can make your riding position more comfortable for long rides - would you? And still have the ability to bring the bars down low for track days/racing without swapping them out - do you now perhaps see the benefits? Besides the Telefix clip-ons(profi-type), which are extremely high end and totally adjustable on 4 axis - own, the Laverda/Jota are it when it comes to adjustment for clearance and comfort. I've known several cafe guys who also switched to these bars, and won't run any other now for the reasons stated. I could have shown pics of it on a XB, but I like to draw from personal knowledge, and it would take a world of time to hunt for the one pic in my 100,000 plus photo collection of Buell pictures - lol
The point is, it is a great piece of tech they developed, applicable to any motorcycle, and should not just be lost in time - displayed only on museum pieces, which is why they are actively sold through Busters and a few other vendors. With shipping it costs the price of inexpensive clip-ons.

Hey - I'm smiling, I know what I'm talking about - lol - The Laverda Jota bars are an old badweb topic, my best warning is to buy them at Busters, everyone else charges twice as much or more, same as the Ace cafe bars specifically designed for the M2 (tuber and Blast applicable - maybe XB's) - on an M2 or Blast - they lock, no other cafe bars on a non CR Buell do - sold at Busters as well. The UK rocks that way - lol
