I know that many folks complain about the XB's loss of value. To wit, a 2003 Kawasaki z1000 (pretty nice bike I think. Retailed for 8500 new. Trade in value is now about 4900.

Ouch! So, an 03 xb9s retailed for ????. Trade in value now 5900. All values from west coast KBB.

Interesting, no?

Interesting? Perhaps.

Many folk on Buells also have (or had) Harleys. Over the years they've gotten spoiled with the way the resale value defies logic and continues to be high. But then again, most Harleys are babied and are well taken care of.

Whereas sport-bikes, well, are ridden harder and used up quicker. Oh yeah, and they're not as shiny. :]

that's my .02

Lets ask Dana/Bads1 if his M2 was ridden harder than my Dyna. I know some Buell owners will actually use their bikes as intended & will see a few track days, etc. But a lot of them are also low mileage babied machines.

I dont really hear the cry of the loss of resale value on the XB's nearly as much as the tube frame models. Right now you are real damn lucky to get $5000 on the open market for one, trade in is next to impossible with a lot of dealers...even Buell dealers who wont accept them. Now you always have exceptions to this..aka Waterloo harley. Couple of M2's have changed hands lately & they felt good to get $3500.

And I dont care about resale value. Didnt buy either one of my bikes with the outlook of selling them & recouping my $$$. The Dyna is a long term member of the family & is not going anywhere.

And I believe the 2003 XB's when the came out where $9995, now trade in for $5900 for a loss of around 40%.

The Z1000 for $8500 now now trading in for $4900 for a similar loss of around 40% give or take a couple.

I wouldn't doubt it a bit that my bike was ridden harder then your Dyna before paint and chrome. Then I wanted to customize it end of story had to be babied couldn't replace it.

If I am going to be worried about resale, I would worry about my 2000 Plymouth Grand Voyager. Cost me $24,000 new and is not worth much more than the $6,000 I owe. Add that to my M2 and Firebolt and I am truly worthless!

At least my house keeps going up and I am having fun.

Buying a vehicle for resale and collector/speculation value is different than buying one to use. The value in something bought to be used is in the using of it, not in the resale of it. If a primary concern is in the resale value of something then buy it used to begin with and let someone else take the primary cost-loss when it becomes "used" instead of "new".

Dana, I have actually had my Dyna out for track days at Blackhawk. I guarantee you that your bike was never ever ridden as hard as i have pushed that bike. That bike has seen drag days, dyno runs, cross country trips, etc. Remember I have ridden that bitch over 57,000 miles so far. Exactly how many miles did you put on your bike in how many years anyways?

57,000 miles in 7 years? That's it Dyna? Dust that puppy off and ride it once in a while, brother. ;)

01 Sportster 27,400 (never been to a track day, just 29 states, Canada, and Mexico)
03 XB9R 9,600 (saw Sturgis once, no track day)

When I was looking at a bike purchase, I was torn between the X1 Lightning and the Sportster. The sporty was cheaper and had a great resale value, which was important just in case my "motorcycle bug" was to be short lived. My more expensive Buell is now worth less than my older HD with more miles on it. Still love 'em both, but I bought the XB strictly for fun.

I didnt buy the bike until 98, only had her a touch over 5 years now. Also put 11,000 in 1 year on the X1. So thats 68,000 miles in 5 years. Not bad for living in wisconsin where we have a 6 month winter.

This is pretty cool for those of us still waiting to acquire our first Buell. As much as I'd like a new XB12S, I'm pretty sure I could live with an 03 XB9S for ~$4k less, or even an M2 for ~$6k less.

Last month's Cycle World review of the XB12 mentions the high mileage testing that they do (120,000 miles) and states that that figure is five times the average life-time of a sport bike. I would expect sportbikes in general to lose value as the newer models arrive that are faster and more capable. After a point, though, their value (to me) disappears altogether since they are so complicated to repair. (Too many pistons and valves and carbs and such.) Average life of 20,000 miles though. That's just broken in!

You rode the hog for a track day??? The organizers of the track day LET you ride your Harley on the track, with sport bikes??? What track... I may need to record that for future reference.

Blackhawk located near bewteen Beloit & rockford has track days for lots of different classes of bikes. learning curves is the name of the school, ask DaveS about em...good guys. They have days for "slower" bikes. Absolutely nothing wrong with taking your HOG out on a track day to learn its limits. Better there than on the street. Hell even the wife made a few laps...course she also kinda went off course & did a little agricultural work...thankfully she kept the bike upright:D

We had guys on baggers, softails, etc. It was a Blast...pardon the pun.

Its like that slogan goes...Track days..their not just for sportbikes anymore.

BTW, who woulda thunk that BMW would have sponsored a race at Daytona using their bikes & it would turn out to be a great race??

The first CLASS I went to at Road America with Reg Pridmore had a Harley running around. Softtail I think.

my xb is still worth 10 grand .....atleast to me. I really could give 2 s$%ts what anybody else thinks.
Hell I have had so much fun on it and have no intentions of getting rid of it anytime soon.
put it in this context. You buy a car to get ya from point a to point b and then lose your ass on it. Most times its mundane and just travel. I don't think any of us look at our travels on our bikes as mundane. They always creat stories for us to remember.
lets see some suv, 4 door sedan or pick up truck do that.
now if it was a vette or a shelby cobra or something like that. well then were in the same game. I say ride your bike like hell and have fun. life is very short.

My 2000 Cyclone has only depreciated by about $1500 to $2000 in about 18,000 miles. Thats fantastic for a sport oriented motorcycle. Heck, that's not bad for an economy car.

The trick is not feeling the need to run out and by a brand new whizzy blinky thing at the peak of riding season. I bought it used, in the dead of winter, in the middle of nowhere, cash in hand, a little over a year old.

Don't get me wrong. I like brand new whizzy blinky things. But when I get them, I don't then start whining about how they have lost value quickly (*cough* i.e. my $200 philips mp3 player that plays CD-R's *cough*)

Reep,

Are we talking book value because the "real" value is what people are willing to pay for something, and it's not as high as book value.

My first 2X CDRW drive cost me $300. Luckily my laptop will be worth more than I paid for it some day.

I am talking trade in value. I bought my 2000 M2 in Feb of 2001 for a little over $5k. I could likely trade it in tomorrow for $3500.

Granted I got a *really good deal* when I bought it, but it was one of several that I saw that winter for a similar price...

We have a few of those around, Cecil is notorious for it. Has to have the latest & greatest bike every year. Screw that crap!! My Dyna is paid for, & I will most likely never ever get rid of it. I dont care if its value drops to $0. I bought the bike to ride & modify as I see fit, didnt buy it as an investment.

Look at all the clowns who paid double the sticker to get a Viper or a DeLorean & now cant even recoupe the original sticker price.

Thanks for the offer Mike, but what I meant was a used M2 for $6000 less than a new XB12S. I.E.- $10,500-$6000= $4500.

Dang though, that XB12S is SOOOO sweet!

Dyna,

A bagger racing class would be a real hoot. If NASCAR can race pickup trucks, the moto race promoters ought to be able to drum up interest in a bagger race. Good for you for taking the HOG to the track.

Im telling you, a Bagger class would be a riot. Goldwings, BMW's, FLH harleys, Big Yammys, etc. Fiberglass bags banging together, radios up full blast:D

I'll take any damn bike out on the track. May not always be the proper weapon for a track day, but its still fun & a learning process also.
