my new ride, the yellow one

how it got here

so, now what?

any know what kinda muffler that is? it's not stock,it's way loud! only thing that I hate about the bike is that.

it's a 2003 xb9s

going to go to a Harley/Buell place and see how much it cost for the 20,000 mile service.

and looking for a stock muffler and some saddle bags on the cheap

It,s a good looking bike! ,and there is nothing bad about a niner!
Go ride that motorcycle!
there are a lot of happy xb9 owners on this site.

whats also nice is that you can easily change the buells to your own taste or idea.
Buy a service manual and do your own ,it saves you $$ and its nice to do (thats my view on it)

The muffler doesn't even seem to have a ding in it....people will trip all over themselves to get one of those. That is a Buell race pipe...the bike most likely has the race ecm and air filter too...keep it the way it is...

I'm more interested in longevity than performance, the bike already has 20,500+ miles on it

Also, congrats on the bike!

You could try and find a stock pipe, although I think the stock pipes have their own issues. It seems like they rust up pretty quick, mine is a 2008 and I'm already seeing some forming around the edges. I too would love to find an aftermarket pipe that isn't any louder than the stock one. I'm quite fond of the relationship I have with my neighbors, and it might go south if I start waking up the whole street when I get home at night ; )

Lost, don't sweat the longevity of such a machine.
I've got the same bike, had the Buell Race kit since it was new in '03.
I've well over 70,000 miles and still going strong.
I've not been real gentle either ; )

that pipe will fetch about 400 bucks on fleabay.... But, I would leave it on the bike unless you just can't stand the noise.
It wont hurt the longevity of the bike.

and welcome aboard!

Before you change that pipe, you owe it to yourself to hear it sing at near redline in 5th gear for a while.

Yes the stock muffler will rust, but it is thick steel and can be painted each year to freshen it up. Might be able to have the stock muffler ceramic coated to prevent rusting.

Deja Vu!! that looks exactly like my first Buell, race kit and all. my current Buell has had the race kit for since mile one and its well over 30,000 now. its designed for the bike so it's not going to hurt it. you'd be doing more harm by running a stock exhaust if its programmed for something different. try coasting or idling through your neighborhood and your neighbors will be fine. works for me and my HOA.

if the ECM says "for race use only" then its a race ECM. if not odds are its stock

Although i've heard that the early race ECM's did not say "for race use only" which could be the case for yours since its an 03, in which case you'll have to check the part number

going to go to a Harley/Buell place and see how much it cost for the 20,000 mile service

Highly suggest you get a service manual and if you have just a hint of mechanical aptitude, do the service yourself.

ps.. Keep the race pipe, the filter would also have been changed and it's more than likely got the race ECM.
Stick your hand up thru the air scoop, to see if the breather restrictor (snorkle) is in place. it's a smaller tube up inside the scoop that feeds the air box..
Take the darn thing out is it's still there.
When it comes to noise, just be considerate in you're own neighborhood.

it was put there for sound epa crap. It makes a great dog chew toy.

open your air box and look to the right of it and if there is a rubber deal going threw the big hole in your frame it is there yank it out.

check this out. you may think it was only there for epa purposes, but there is a difference. it may be almost negligible on a stock bike, but to each their own. i just thought i should throw this out there since i stumbled across it.
