Ok guys, I need some advise here. I'm in the market trying to buy touring saddlebags for my XB9R '03 and I really like the Nelson-Rigg Spirit models but I am not sure about which size will fit my bike properly. Any other saddle bags that are like these? Are the 50's too big that interfere with the rear tail signals of the bike? Thanks! | ||

I got a cortech sport bag set for my xb12 lightning last year, I think it was just over $200 for the saddle bags, tail bag and a mini tank bag. It all fits very nicely but I think most "universal" bags would fit well on an XB, with the exhaust not being in the way. | ||

I bought some cheapos off ebay for about $50. My only issue with them is that they sag into the tire when they get heavy. That will be an issue with all large soft saddlebags. What I did, since I never ride a passenger, was to jam some PVC pipe onto my folded up passenger pegs. Quick, simple, and easy to remove saddlebag supports. | ||

I have a STT, and the number plates do a great job of holding the bags out of harm's way. Since many people who bought a STT took the number plates off, maybe you could find a set for cheap. They mount up to the same holes as the passenger pegs. (Message edited by totallyNoobular on February 15, 2011) | ||

With all of the great design and engineering that went into the Buell line, I could never understand how the bags for R and S models are so pathetic! Why would a bag unzipper from the bottom? Why are the straps not long enough? I have the Buell bags for my Firebolt and my wife has them for her scg because we wanted to keep them mostly Buell. I realize that bags are an afterthought but the Buell bags are a not-a-thought. | ||

P.S. Why do the straps cross under the passenger seat where the bracket and latch are? | ||

All of the pieces go together quite nicely, with the tail bag having special connectors for the saddle bags to hold everything in place. Cost me $235 total at my local dealer, saddle bags were $110. I couldn't tell you how they hold up over a long trip though, because they've only been on the bike long enough to take that picture and go for a quick ride. That will be changing as soon as Spring is here and all the salt is washed out of Michigan's many pot holes.  I was also informed earlier that I have them on backwards.  Perhaps they'll fit even better when I turn them around! thanks for the tip, Xl_cheese! | ||

I bought a pair of the stock Buell hard bags for the "long" Ss model that integrates into the trunk bag and was completely disappointed, no capacity, zippers that were hard to open and they opened to the side, which was not practical at all. I ended up with a pair of Rapid Transit 77's and really like them. Just Google Rapid Transit saddles bags and you'll see options. The saddle bags have two different sizes 45 and 77; the 45's had a tad more space than the stock Buell bags (I filled them with foam peanuts and then tried to stuff those peanuts into the stock bags and they wouldn't all quite fit) but the 77's had much more room (more than twice) and take up not too much more room on the bike. You really can't carry a passenger with them mounted as the bags come right up against the passenger foot pegs (and I strap the bags to the foot pegs mounts)so their is no room left for a passengers heel on the peg. They have a nice strap system that hooks into itself or you can cross the bike and hook them in opposite sides and pull tight. I hook mine on the foot peg mount and the rear reflector mount as well as running the sturdy cross straps under the seat, which is a bit of a chore but worth it for security I think. They also have really nice zippers, come with rain covers, top mounted carry handles, an expansion zipper (that makes the bags huge out to the side but not un-ridable), and an external pocket along the long edge that is great for those little things you need at the rest stop but don't want to go digging in your bag. I've done a couple of weekend trips (1000 miles or so)with them and they've held up great...enough that I bought a strap mount tank bag by the same company(which is still on back order) that I think will be really nice too. Keep in mind I did all this on an '10 XB12Ss with a stock seat. Good luck. |
