Only one spot like that? |

Yep. Only one spot on the tire--pretty symmetrical on both sides of the tire as you can see from the pics. As I remember my last Q2 rear had a much more minor issue like this and I think it was only on one side of the tire so I thought maybe I cut it. This is way worse. |

Had the same issue with my Qualifier RR. The tyre rep said there was nothing to worry about, so he says... |

sure doesn't seem normal to me. Did the tire rep give you a reason for this tearing? I mean the deepest part is probably slightly more than 1/16 inch deep. So did you use the tire the normal length of time with no negative repercussions? |

Too many free range cattle up thar in Fresno and Tulare county – quit racing over those cattle guards…. you gonna to get hurt! Dunlop had issues back in 2003 at Daytona – haven’t head of anything since. Might try posting on the racing forum and see if you hear anything… Or call these guys – they rep the brand for racing: http://www.dunlopracing.com/sts_about.html 800-776-8473 good luck |

My understanding of tires is old school, sectional and clamshell are the two designs I know of. does that imply the dunlop is a sectional tire? http://www.unsafemotorcycles.com |

I don't like it! looks like a seam coming apart. Replace it. Bug Dunlop for a replacement. |

Fresno, I have seen something similar, but only on one side. I believe I caused it by hitting a steel plate the local DOT was using to cover up road work (a really big hole, that is) during the day. The plate was still sharp on the edge. Don't know how you would get the pattern you are showing. Good luck with the dealer. |

Too many free range cattle up thar in Fresno and Tulare county – quit racing over those cattle guards…. you gonna to get hurt! One of the scariest things I have encountered on the road are those cattle guards. For those locals who know the roads around Pine Flat Dam, those guards ruin what would otherwise be a kick ass road. Most of them see to be placed at really bad places (at least for a motorcycle lol.) I can still remember rounding a bend still leaned over and sliding the front tire all the way across one. thank god it hooked up when it hit the asphalt on the other side. Not fun. |

Wouldn't the center patch be the damaged part with a steel plate or cattle crossing? |

I would never relax riding on that. Not worth the stress, get it replaced on Dunlop. |

I just had Dunlop Sportmax Q2's put on my 1999 X1 Lightning. Hope they are as claimed by the shop that put them on for me. Said they are a great sport tire. Fresno: it appears like you might have cut the tire. I know that rain, tires, and rough roads can tear a tire up pretty fast, especially on sharp rocks. Keep us posted as to what you hear from Dunlop, if anything. |

How would I cut the tire on both sides without cutting the center portion of the tire? I am sure this is a defective tire. I have already spoke to consumer affairs today and have emailed the pics in this thread. they seemed concerned and we'll see how they address the issue (Message edited by fresnobuell on February 14, 2011) |

Fresno: It doesn't take much to cut a tire. I've edited this post a couple of times after re-reading the entire post. This tire is a two-compound tire, eg; the sides are softer than the middle of the tire. Maybe, as suggested, a DOT steel plate for temp road repairs is the culprit. Does this seem logical? Q2's are pretty popular. Hope you get to the bottom of this mystery. Keep us posted. (Message edited by two_seasons on February 15, 2011) (Message edited by two_seasons on February 15, 2011) |

I tried to use one at a late season track day last year as it was all I could get on short notice. Lasted 8 laps and looked like that........only worse. Dunlop replaced it. I never used it, you want it ?

Update: Dunlop contacted me this morning and will warranty the tire as expected. they called it an "open tread splice." Only hitch is I have to take the wheel into an authorized dealer and pay for the mounting/balancing, which is okay with me as I have gotten way more than $30 use out of the old tire. I am fully satisfied with Dunlop's handling of this issue. (Message edited by fresnobuell on February 15, 2011) |

Good to see Dunlop covered it under Warranty, as I be looking for a new set of tires this riding season, as I been reading the forum to see which tires people like the best on here as I don't ride on the track but do a lot of straight long hwys here in Nebr, with some curves which I don't lead into much, so I would want a tire with harder rubber in the middle then the stock tires had, and good grip on the sideways for if I do start leaning it over more. Any idea or thoughts on a tires to go with out there anyone thanks, as i don't mean to hijack the topic here |

Have these tires been frozen? There was an issue with both Dunlop and Bridgestone related to the tires being frozen (as in the belly of a cargo plane), then getting heated up. Some split longitudinally down to the cord. |

Do they fly these things around? I would think that would cost prohibitive. |

Depends on how fast you need them and where they are coming from, I guess. Oh, and BTW, the guys that had this happen talked to the rep, who indicated that as long as cords were intact, they were OK - they raced them. (The previous comments are merely hearsay and should not be considered an endorsement of potentially unsafe practices) JM |

Fres - I was talking about Q2's - Not sure what the affected Bridgestones were. You can "race" anything. |

I have a pair of Q2 mounted and ready to go come spring. The bike has sat in the garage since they were installed in November. I appreciate you posting up the problem, the solution and the positive findings other Q2 users have had. Cheers |

Xo - Same here. Just curious - - are you running 190's or 180's on the rear? (I'm running 190 rear) Most of the feedback I have been getting on the Q2's has been positive. I had been running stock Pirelli's and they were working fine (track duty), but decided to try something different this spring. |

Stirz007 - I have 180/120 rear/front. I just wanted to change one thing at a time and evaluate that change, so I stuck with the stock profile. Like you, I too have gone from stock to the Q2. It was a second Pirelli rear that I changed from. I had no complaints but I'm still a novice track day kinda guy learning about setting up my suspension. |
