If you think those checkpoints are inadequate, wait till you've ridden from Presidio to Terlingua. That road will give you an idea of what the INS folks are up against. rt |

Yeah... hate to stereotype, but I didn't really want to spend a ton of time in the northwest corner of Texas... will be really interesting ride through there though... hope to do at least part of your route RT... going to try to find the lava beds today an hour north of (F*ckin) Alamagordo... time to bundle up... Hey, let's start a bail money collection for Char. Sounds like she's gonna need it before long. |

When this topic dies down it needs to be moved to the Tale Section. No use letting this great story lanquish in the archives of the Quick Boards. |

Today was almost another U-Turn at the 30 mile mark north of Alamogordo... apparently I got frostbite on my cheeks yesterday... duh... had to look up the symptoms because I never felt like a bodypart was on fire before it went numb... oops... I better be more careful... Some people paint cows... here they paint burros...
Great little cafe in Chorizozo... woops I mean Carrizozo...
This area of New Mexico is really starting to grow on me... too bad the only game in town is the missile-space race... probably beyond my quals to land a job here... |

The Rio Grande Rift Valley is one of largest exposed rift valleys in the world... The earth was or is spreading apart and creating new crust at some point at these locations... Some of them are still tectonically active... such as the East African Rift System... which crosses almost the entire continent of Africa... The Rio Grande Rift Valley is pretty big too... http://tapestry.usgs.gov/features/28riogrande.html Apparently those pesky mountains I tried to cross the other day are the eastern edge of the rift valley... they are very formidable... The Valley of Fire lava flow is north of Alamogordo and is very very young, and therefore contains very obvious lava fabrics (or textures of rock)... including really nice examples of pressure ridges... these occur when the lava starts to cool on the top, but is still molten underneath... coolio !!!
Me... just being me...
Today was pretty tough riding up there... I think I was dealing with low 40's... and I have never ridden in that cold for that long... but the cool cafe near the lava fields helped... I hope my face doesn't start peeling from that frostbite I got yesterday... (Message edited by Whatever on February 10, 2011) |

Bike chick flick: http://vimeo.com/18479718 Don't the space geeks need a Buell riding environmental engineer? Kind of southish for the hip life of Santa Fe & Taos. State jobs in Albuquirky. Ruidoso for the horsie life. Roswell for the alien sightings. Carlsbad Caverns for when the relatives come to visit. Or John Wesley Harding's grave in El Paso. |

When my wife Melanie did her lap of America last summer, she came across Tiffany in norther California. Tiffany was on her way up to Seattle and Melanie was heading south and home. Pretty slim chance that they would be stopping at the same cafe for lunch. But they did. |

Big Bend is our favorite place on earth, so far. Whatever you do, hang a right in Marathon on the way out. Take 90 instead of the interstate! Rob |
