Buell stated the power characteristics drove the displacement. Announced in 2007, with a displacement of 1125 cc and making 146 hp, it seems to be at a disadvantage to the competition. Knowing what the 1190 puts out, one wonders why Eric didn't go a bit more 2007 Ducati 1098 - 160 hp, 90.4 ft·lbf @8000 rpm (Message edited by sprintst on February 04, 2011) |

I think it's also been revealed since the closure that someone at HD ordained that Buell's new engine HAD to be smaller than the 1130cc V-Rod. |

There's a lot more than 146 available at the crank with fuel, timing, decked heads and exhaust. A lot more. I'll tell you this: the 1125r motor in stock trim is a really incredibly durable unit. That's saying something for a big-bore twin. I put over 34,000 street 10,000 track miles on my first motor, and while down on power a bit, it was still very durable and running great when I replaced it. I beat the piss out of that motor. |

Several bikes in this class have more power but they are all heavier as well. Jdug, that is awesome. Hugh, Is that substantiated? It sounds completely silly yet plausible. Then again, back in 2007 1125 was about as big a twin you could get. If we were living in a parallel world the 1190 would be available to the masses. |

Ducati got 160 bhp from their 1098 V-twin because they know how to extract every possible hp out of an engine and they are willing to push their engines further. Let's face it. Ducati races in Moto GP and WSB, with MGP being highly competitive and only the best survives and wins. Their engineers become really good learning in those two environments. You simply can't learn that much from ordinary production and design. Just like Buell engineers learned so much by racing in the US. This is why the Japanese are so good at extracting so much hp from inline fours down to 600cc's. It's really amazing what they can do. If Buell was allowed to race in these higher tier venues, they too would be able to extract more hp from a given engine. Racing always improves the breed. This is also why H-D's engines are so stagnant. They don't race in any real competitive arena. |

Well Ducati has also had a lot longer to extract more power from their engine, as you said, a lot of track time and engineering years to tweak 1 hp here, 1 there. I was wondering why Eric didn't just adjust the displacement to match the competitions power, and it makes perfect sense to me that it could be a Harley imposed limitation (Message edited by sprintst on February 04, 2011) |

http://m.sportrider.com/dyno/146_sportbike_dyno_ch arts/photo_47.html Looks like 138 hp at the wheel to me. Mine has the same power. Yeah, it took a custom exhaust to get that, but it's definitely in the same range as the 1098. I'll still take my 1125, thanks. |

Hmmmmmm....let me get this straight...Ducati got 160hp...wonder who the little bird was that showed them how....my information plays it as an american company helped with the horsepower leap....someone very famous in the drag racing world. If I'm wrong....mehhh, it won't be the first time. |

I also thought I read somewhere that Ducati's claimed 160hp included the ram air pressurized during measurement. I know searching the internet they actually end up dyno-ing at 123-128bhp |

I posted my bone stock Dyno run a long time back. 131 RWHP. Stock everything. I should probably run it again now that it's dialed in. |
