I know I've said this about every bike I've ever owned and kept for any length of time but the Buell Ulysses is the best, most versatile motorcycle ever made. I love mine! But, just like the others, I secretly lust after another. In this case it is the ultra rare 2010 XB12X. Buell had succeeded in making the '06 (first year) much more reliable and robust with all the improvements. I was (and am still) ready to trade up when the lights went out in East Troy.

Uly_Man sir,
if you don't mind, I would like to know more about your comment above about the new 3 bearing wheel.
Thanks in advance,
Dan

I think Uly_man's comment was about the stronger RIM, not the bearings.

And he's incorrect.

Only the X has the stronger (heavier) wheel rim to help fight dings and dents offroad.

The XT has a standard XB/1125 wheel, without the strengthening band.

just out of curiosity, how is the steering angle physically limited lesser or increased more? is it the tabs on the lower tripple? or was the frame neck elongated/shortened?
either way it is inconsequential. i would not weild a dremel to change it

Uly_Man wrote;
"The double, belt side, bearing mod is a myth and not worth worrying about IMO. Other factors, human, are the problem."

Just curious about this statement.

The turning radius of an '06 is less than newer models but it's not a problem while riding it. A bike turns by leaning. Pushing it around in the garage you notice it.
The physical reason that causes the lesser radius I'm not sure about. It doesn't need fixing (imo).

I have almost dropped mine in the drive way with my wife on. She had to put her foot down( a no no) but it saved us from going over!

The steering angle difference is via different triple trees, with a different offset from the stem.

It's not just "dremel away a tab", sorry.

I want to say they actually changed the rake and trail in the process, and also the bottom of the fork leg. The axle is offset in the fork, not centered, to keep the wheelbase the same.

Don't get the wrong idea please, but how tall is your wife? Heck, I'm 6'2" but come close to dumping my Uly more than once putting my left foot down in a pothole or depression at a stoplight

i'll have to wait until my finances are more in order.
after a harder look at my debts, and actually crunching #'s, the wife and i have decided to postpone getting a Uly.

i hope that i can find an 09 XB12X with luggage when i am ready to buy. 'when' should be late, this year.

i do appreciate everyone's inputs, both the factual and opinions. looking up specifications can get confusing and time consuming.
polling the audience quickly helped me understand with perspective and decide what my next bike WILL be. thank you all

If you research the forum in-depth here you’ll quickly discover that more importantly than the year, is the color. Black ones are not only faster, but better built, as well.

I discovered that the reason behind this is while these motorcycles were being assembled extra care and attention was given to the black ones. Oftentimes, workers would shout out; “this is a black one guys, let’s get it right”.

I’m not making this up; it was in Canfield’s book, towards the end, if I recall correctly. I met Erik at Homecoming one year, and he confirmed this to me in person, as he was signing my forehead with a permanent marker.

Buy a black one – case closed.

So, using that logic, since mine came from the factory black, regardless of what I've changed the color to (blue currently), it should still have that black Uly 'dna' and still be the superior motorbike?

Is there a synergistic effect when one takes a black Uly and puts barricade orange plastic on it? Or does the orange reduce (kryptonite?) the effect of the birth color?

Love our 09 XT so much that we couldn't pass up an 09 X(great price and only 4K miles, both are Thrust Blue) that I just brought home. Had to say bye bye to the Thruxton and need now to part ways with the XB9SX, but we won't argue over who rides the Uly any more!!

Not only are Black ones faster and better built they also handle better.
They will stop and turn on a dime and give you five cents change!

I know this goes against the sacred code of the covenant, but I feel I must speak out. Even though the council of the Iliad will see me dead for this, the time has come. We need not sit silently in the shadows anymore. The world needs to know that it is Racing Red that the Elves have devoted their incredible magic to. Our disinformation campaign allowing black & blue owners to think their bikes superior, while successful, is no longer needed.

To those that deluded themselves into thinking the false rumors were true, I am sorry. Life’s harsh sometimes. Perhaps you may have a friend that owns one of the true Superior Greek Wonderers. If so tell them Elder Whisperstealth has enlightened you, and maybe, just maybe you will be allowed to ride one…

The Blue was made as an update to correct the shortcomings of the black and orange and to allow folks to spot skilled riders from a distance.

We love our 09 XT, but would have considered any year X model for a second Uly because they are amazing bikes. We got extremely lucky finding a peach of an 09 X in the grooviest color, thrust blue.

Two blue Ulys....woo hoo!

Eulysses- I'm definitely the lucky one in this two Uly relationship.

It's refreshing to be with someone who enjoys hanging with a 40 something tomboy who's into bikes, and doesn't just tolerate that aspect of me. He was totally supportive when I wanted to buy our first street bike together, our beloved blast. He was ok when I traded my office, suits, heels, and hairspray for a training range, kevlar, a snell certified helmet, and sunscreen. Even though that career change meant big changes at that time for our standard of living, our quality of life actually improved.

Motorcycles, and teaching people how to be safer on them has become one of our common sustainable interests. I am fortunate that he came along for the ride.

The Barricade ORANGE ones are without question the fastest and the best with the best fuel mileage and luggage carrying capacity.

Early models have a little less turning radius, but those of us who ride them as they are meant to be ridden, you know, bags loaded and a knee down on the Cherohala at speed, never have a complaint about it.

I'll get your blue one right here!
