What is the benefit of the catch can breather mod. the catch can eliminates all of the oil spooge from being fed into your intake and burned. Oil and water (what comes out of the breather valves) does not burn very well, and causes poor low rpm performance. I have noted significantly better low RPM performance from both my 9 and 12 motors, and well as better all around performance, less of a flat spot, no more off idle stumble, and no more jerkiness anywhere. |

You don't need a catch can - run the hose down and cap it or add a petcock like I did. If you use a clear hose from the filter down, you can see it fill up, and drain when necessary. I would highly recommend venting that line if you do so, as a vent would be required for your breather system to function properly. |

Definitely need a breather filter. It fits great behind the oil cooler.

I have mine running down to a simple small black plastic bottle zip tied to the oil cooler bracket , you can barely see it . Most of what I have seen collected in it is condensation , especially in the cold weather and , very , very little oil . Maybe a drop or two . The only thing I wonder about is , I have the two breather hoses T'd into a single hose the same size . I wonder if that hose should be bigger , since the stock set up hoses are independently vented in the air box . |

I agree, I just could not justify the cost. I had the $20 Pegasus can anodized black, and the entire cost of my breather setup (hose, fittings, filter, catch can, anodizing...) was about $55. I would be abut $100 more into it for the A.S.B can. I like to support Al and Joanne a lot, but something tells me they would be better served by me sending them a $100 bill than by me buying their catch can! |

I have the Pegasus can on my 02 X1 and 09 XT. Works great on both. Kdogshirow, I wouldn't worry about the T, tuber breathers used a T fitting from the factory and they spit out a lot more junk than the XBs do. I didn't opt for the typical "mount it next to the oil cooler" method of most other XB owners. The can on my X1 makes a mess on the chin fairing every time I drain it, so I picked a mounting location on the XT that provided a clear path to the ground while draining. The filter wouldn't easily fit in the same place, so I routed more hose and placed the filter in front of the license plate. Despite what others have and will say, routing the hose "uphill" after the can doesn't cause any problems with building up splooge in the hose and blocking it.. as long as you don't ever let the can fill up higher than the inlet hose. I rarely get anything other than water from the XT can. The X1, on the other hand, is always full of splooge. Even after rebuilding the engine and installing XB rocker covers with brand new umbrella and turret valves, it's messy. If I don't empty the can once per tank of gas, it starts puking out of the filter. |

I just picked up this Ducati catch can on eBay last night for $12 bucks. Its from a 1994 M900 Monster. I might have to clean it up and paint it black again but it has potential.

What is the benefit of the catch can? Lighten your wallet is the primary benefit, also keeps the condensate off the road. |

Depending on the location of where your hose comes out it can prevent the oily residue from getting on your muffler and rear tire... |

You guys are funny...! Anyone ever bothered to check the valve on the rocker cover (box)....it's ONE WAY...! I will not allow crap into the engine. PLUS.....condensation is only picked up at the initial startup..."maybe" another 2 or 3 minutes...on a good running engine. "PLUS...", my "open" breather hoses...have NEVER left unwanted oil-water mixture on the ground...or even stained the muffler..! Gee...maybe it's my, several motorcycles and cars over my MANY years that are wrong... This info isn't hearsay..someone said, or...I read... It's fact. Save your money. If you feel you must do this change...just do like most of the racers....run it out the back somewhere, or like I had to change mine from the previous owner...straight down to the front of the muffler. And just a note....being as stock plumbed into the intake tract, this actually, slightly, actually....helps lower the pressure in the crankcase...which is a good thing... Despite the experts, less pressure in the crankcase WILL...add power. Mike |

I'm not arguing your experiences, but my open breather X1 leaves an oily mess all over my swingarm, and so did my Uly leave drips on the floor before using a catch can. |

I agree, you really don't need a "catch can". I just used a clear vinyl hose to allow the spooge to collect in and put a petcock on the lower end of it to drain when necessary. It has been on for a couple thousand miles and only has had about 2 drops of moisture in it. If I decide to leave this setup on my bike, I may someday buy a nicer looking can but for now, my clear tubing kind of matches the crude but beautiful design of the rest of the bike. So what i got from this is that almost everyone agrees that the breather reroute is worth it and good benefit but the catch can is and option with no benefit besides not dripping oil? sound about right? |

Devallx, I would say that's about right. The setup on my 08 XT works exactly the same as any that have a catch can. Admittedly though, the catch can looks nicer and is higher tech than a simple piece of clear vinyl tubing from ACE Hardware! I considered just leaving the end of the hose open but there really is enough crap on the roads already without adding to the problem. Please let us know what you do with yours and post pics if you have time. |
