Hangetsu, I think my chain will outlast a belt. It is an O-ring chain and I have a chain oiler so it is constantly being lubed where the chain meets sprocket(s). The mess is not really as bad as my bikes make it look. I never ever never ever ever ever washed any of my bikes so that is years of grime you're looking at. Drive gearing options are more than the 2 you have with the belt. You can carry a masterlink or two with you at all times as they are cheap and light. I'm not saying it's for everyone because obviously not. Just an idea for anyone interested in gearing changes with the belt. |

I have broken three belts in the past 15 months. The last one happened where I had no cell service. I ride in the rain more than when it's dry. I only do about 10 percent of my riding off road but the belts don't hold up. You can get a chain anywhere and they are never back ordered. Like Skinstains said you can carry a master link and fix a chain. One a belt goes there is no fix it or any way to limp down the road. |

So now that I've seen the light, I do have a serious question. When going from the belt pulleys to sprockets which are a good deal thinner, did you have to do any shimming to deal with center alignment, or do the sprockets line up with no fuss? |

You need to space out the front sprocket about an 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. I had a sheet metal shop stamp out a washer that fit over the output shaft. |

Thanks Kenny. Now for another stupid question, for these are situations that border on the limit of my mechanical skills. How do you measure that alignment and calculate the thickness of the spacers needed? |

I just put the front and rear sprocket on. Then I used a piece of string held on the back of the rear sprocket to the front sprocket and made the string just touch the front of the rear sprocket then measured how much the front sprocket had to come out. I am sure there is some sort of a real tool to do this but I did not have one. |

I'm pretty sure a front sprocket with a .250" off-set makes it plug and play. I will check on the .250" measurement. |

I've been slacking a bit with the part #'s for all you will need. I'll work on it tomorrow and post up. |

Hi All I am new to this blog site (London, UK). Have an '04 xb12s and have just snapped my third belt in 22,000 miles and am peed-off bigtime. I want to do a chain conversion using 530 chain and I want to cut the revs so a smaller rear sprocket called for. Does anyone know where I can find an email address for someone called 'Saintly' in NY? -or find a reasonable cost kit hat will do the job? Thanks}} |
