Hi, jus't a quickie, i'm currently rebuilding a set of R1 calipers, i have new seals but none of that grease that i have used in the past.

Is said grease a special type ? or can i use vaseline(petroleum jelly) or just a normal grease.

Thanks

Brake calipers? Use the same type of brake fluid you'll use in the system, nothing else is needed except for it to be very clean. Wet the seals down with brake fluid, put the seal into the groove, install the pistons and squeeze them in.

The Buell caliper rebuild kit comes with a few squirts of the clear silicone lubricant. I've personally never used it in a rebuild, and do it just like Dean suggested, by having some fresh DOT4 around, and "soaking" the seals in it first before installation.

Honestly, as good as luck as I've had with rebuilds (I do it *all* the time as the Buell ZTL2 caliper system can be a bit dust-prone and require rather frequent attention), I would just do the "clean really really well with denatured alcohol, coat everything in DOT4, assemble with fresh seals" procedure on any MC brake I rebuilt.

You might post up on a WERA or R1 forum or ask a local racer. Surely someone has R1 specific expertise.

I personally WOULD NOT use any petroleum or silicone based grease anywhere on a DOT4 based brake system.

I agree with all the above and only ever use brake fluid. However, my local Halfords sells red seal lube.
