I am Damon's friend and he asked me to post this on this board. I just left the hospital and Damon is doing well considering. As you can see from the pictures (see URL), Damon is a very lucky fellow. The bike was ripped into numerous pieces after hitting a fire-hydrant (see picture of up-rooted hydrant). The engine is still missing. Damon has some injuries. Basically, he has a cracked vertibra, slightly injured lung, a few cracked ribs, scratched liver and a few cuts here and there. He's in pretty good shape considering the shape of the bike. He was in good spirits and joking around with us in the hospital. I am having a hard time posting pics here so please just go to the post about the accident I had put up on the BMW board right after I found about about the accident. At the time of the post below, I did not know what shape Damon was in. http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/m-lounge/forum.php?postid=3985549&page=1 |

My prayers are with him my friend. I can't get to pics of the bike but if the engine is still missing I am glad he is still alive. |

Thank God he's feeling up (mentally) looking at those pics I can only think that he'd be on deaths door. It looks like he shattered or ripped the FRAME in half!? What in the world happened? Something bad must have happened to send him off the road and then of course, looking at the grass, even in a controlled departure from the road he never would have seen that hydrant. Damn, I'm adding him to my prayers and wishing him a speedy recovery. Please keep us updated on his condition until he can return and tell us how he's doing himself.. Thanks.. Later, |

Thanks for all the well wishes. I'll pass them onto Damon. The accident happened on Stasney Lane in Austin, between I-35 and Burleson Rd. (for any of you that know Austin). This road has numerous deep dip and bumps, and is extremely uneven. It's likely the most uneven paved public-road I have ever driven on. There is some construction in the area and the road may have possibly had a small trace of sand on the road (this is very dangerous for bikes as most of you know). Damon was following some friends from work after they had eaten lunch. Damon passed their car at about 60MPH and hit one of the dips right after he went around their car. Imagine a sharp dip in the pavement about 14" deep over about 12 feet of road. After the dips, you can see where cars bottoms have scraped the pavement as they came out of the dips. Back to the accident.....When Damon hit the dip, his front-end started wobbling. Damon was unable to regain control and the bike began to tank-slap. It slammed him to the pavement. The bike and Damon hit the curb and went into the air. After that, the passengers of the car said all they saw were pieces of the motorcycle flying thru the air and Damon hitting the guardrail. I personally did not see the bike. I work with Damon and know all the people in the car that saw it happen. From their description and looking at the original pictures, it appears that the steering head with forks was totally seperated away from the main frame, the engine is totally seperated from the frame and missing (must be in the tall grass somewhere), the rear swingarm with wheel & shock was ripped totally from the frame, as well as the seat/fender being totally seperated from the frame. As you can see from the pictures, the bikes main components were laying some 40 ft from one another. Damon ended up maybe 100 ft from the rear wheel. If you look in picture #4 (see URL in original post), you can see 2 people standing far in the distance. That is where Damon ended up. |

Our thoughts and prayers are with Damon for a speedy recovery. That's the most fragmented I think I recall having seen a bike. Of note, is the lack of fluids on the ground. Fuel may have evaporated, oil would not have. This may be testimony to the integrity of the vessels. Tell him to get well and get ready to ride...SMOOTHER ROADS! Court |

Damon, Hope you recover fully and quickly. Someone up there must like you. Being a Chicago Firefighter, I have seen many motorcycle wrecks, including my own. That was indeed horrific, and I am glad to hear that you are doing so well (considering the circumstances). Good Luck, Mike |
