picked up some race plastics. does anyone have experience with prepping these things for paint? I hear people at the track saying they 'primed and sanded' but what does that mean...spray primer on it and sand it? I'm not looking to do a super high quality paint job,but I want it to look decent at least.Plus I'm home with a busted wrist with nothing to do. I also have to figure out how to mount 'em up. Of course I have a Cr and will have to accommodate the R fairing, and the belly pan will need fastening points on the bike. Yea, prime it, and then once the paint is dry, wet sand the primer smooth. Then put on your top coat. Then wet sand that. And so on. Painting sucks. It's messy, it stinks, and it takes forever. And, I suck at it. | ||

umm, i'd look into your project a lil bit deeper.If you are planning on painting plastic, there is a flex agent additive for the paint to promote adhesion and durability. If the parts to be painted are indeed plastic and not fiberglass, the paint can crack and peel within months without the flex additive. | ||

Depending on the finish of the fibreglass you can use some "filler primer" as the bottom filler coat, that'll fill in minor imperfections and you can sand that flat. Fibreglass can absorb quite a bit of paint if it's not sealed properly. A layer of filler primer, sanded and then a sealer/primer on top (sanded) and then bulid up a few layers of paint sanding back each layer. The more layers you apply the greater the depth of colour you get. A couple of layers of clearcoat/lacquer on top of that and you're good to go. A reasonable finishing compound will then cut that back to a lovely shine.. | ||

01 - I am getting ready to prep the same plastics you have over the next month or two. I'd be happy to share notes. It hit 5 degrees in the shop this morning, so I've been kinda weak on getting the plastics prep'd. Just bought a nice 20000 btu heater, so now no excuses. First thing, wash everything with soap and water, then look for pinholes, chips, blemishes. If you are going for just disposa-plastics, you can just spray paint them, but that's what it will look like when you are finished. If you want a little better, as Jim says, be prepared for quite a bit of sanding, sanding, sanding and more sanding. First step - wash, make repairs to glass as needed, sand. Second - body filler (Bondo or your favorite polyester filler), sand again to maybe 400? Third - prime, sand again Topcoat(s), sand again (wet sand) Clear coat, wet sand again Final Clear coat Good automotive finishes are the way to go, House of Kolor, DuPont, etc. Dust free environment is the hard part - rent a booth if you can. I have a filter box and tent arrangement I use, but the trick to a nice finish, besides tons of prep, is a dust-free area to work. | ||

hi matt, figure out mounting and drilling before painting. you will scratch and scuff them. prep and paint after final mounting and fitment is done or else you will be painting again. they are already primed and sanded with 600 grit. thanks, mike | ||

thanks Mike,I'm gonna start fitting them up as soon as I get a fairing bracket and an exhaust. Bigevil, they are all Factory Body Works as far as I know. I have been in contact with FBW to try to get some pics and info on more bodywork-waiting to hear back. There isn't much at all on their site for the 1125. | ||

Yup... rattle cans, sand paper and tape. Oh, and some Vinyl numbers from Home Depot. What's amazing is how much better these bikes look in flat black. I chose it because it hides flaws in my home-painted finish. But, I actually like it on the bike a fair bit better than the stock black. | ||

No pics yet. It's decidedly better than gloss, though, that's for sure. the ONLY time I've ever gotten a complement on the appearance of my Buells is the track bike in flat back. | ||

01 - how is the install going? I'm also fitting up the FBW plastics, and am having some grief with the pod covers - what did you do? So far, the tail section seemed to go on pretty well but I haven't started on upper/lower fairing yet. The plan is to knock the rest out over the next two weeks, then go to paint. Thanks JM |
