Check out these lithium batteries for our bikes. I like the idea of being lighter, smaller, longer lasting and more powerful but not the price. I wonder how well they actually work? http://www.shoraipower.com/s-43932-XB12X-Ulysses.a spx |

Fantastic. At least mine is fantastic. I wouldn't trust a cheapo Chinese one. I plan on picking up a few of the one from Erik Buell Racing, as it has a load balancing circuit which will help extend the life of them. Lead acid batteries are a waste. Big, heavy, and they don't last. |

Wow! Very cool. Any idea on battery life? A lot less weight, takes up a lot less room and allows for more options in moving the ecm to a better spot, and longer life(?). I like it. |

I've had it 2 years now, it has been acting up, I need to contact Speedcell and see what they say, and as I think I lost a cell due to a bad connection. The cells are shrink-wrapped together, so they are more vulnerable to damage than something like the Erik Buell Racing battery with its hard case. |

Thanks Badrap and Froggy. I think I'll sit on the sidelines while improvements are made. The Erik Buell Racing battery is very cool but since I'm not a racer, and money matters, it's too rich for my blood. Promising things to come though! Cool. |

The battery on my Blast is starting to show the end of its life, so I will replace it when its dead, same with my 1125's after they crap out over the next few years. These batteries are the future, and if they last as long as they should (estimates at a about decade minimum), the price to life ratio should be similar to a lead battery. Then being a fraction of the weight will improve fuel economy and performance |

Froggy, got enough added wires in there? No wonder you need a smaller battery. Your ride is one step a way from being a cylon |

while you're out playing with your headlights, you should do something about your master cylinder cover.

Followed up on Shorai, figured they were Chinese... Not. Looks like they're out of Sunnyvale, CA. hmmmm Silicon Valley... I'm interested, have to see if I can order one and what my dealership discount puts it at. Less weight, volume but more Joules! |

Sure does sound like a Chinese name. Good to know, I will have to look further into it.

That would take away from the resale value of the said cover 50 years from now |

>>> Followed up on Shorai, figured they were Chinese... Not. Looks like they're out of Sunnyvale, CA. hmmmm Silicon Valley.. Funny. Early on in my riding life I thought that Yuasa was a Japanese brand. LOL. Umm, on their site they advertise "Japanese engineering and components." Probably good stuff, but not American made. |

I don't understand how they are making those lithium ion cells without some kind of smart charger circuitry to protect the cells... Maybe the circuitry is buried in the cell itself and I just can't see it. Without the smart charging, I wouldn't expect the cells to last very long (maybe a year or two). |

The more I look at the Shorai batteries the more I like the idea. I'll pay a little extra for a battery thats smaller, lighter and lasts longer. |

I did read of a "5-pin connector" that enables their as-yet-unreleased charger to monitor/charge each cell individually. It really DOES sound interesting. I just e-mailed them for more info, I'll pass it on. Their FAQs say the Deltran Tender Jr. will work fine on their batteries but also say it shouldn't be needed, due to a much lower internal resistance. "Shorai LFX have been used in some of the most extreme high-current projects in the world, including autonomous aircraft, boats, and submarines, electromagnetic rail gun research, and more." and "Every Shorai LFX is built in our own ISO 9000:2008 certified factory. All the primary cell ingredients are sourced from Japan, which allows us to produce the most consistent and reliable cells. Then we do individual cell quality control and matching over a six-week period, for every cell we make." More soon- Zack |

I agree. Their FAQ page is quite interesting. |

Well, so much for hoping for this being a homegrown operation. I heard back from their CA office tho - Shorai Inc. is the North American distribution and tech center for Shorai batteries. Other markets such as Asia and Europe will have their own centers opening later. The LFX cells use components from Japan and China inside, and are assembled in China. We expect our BMS01 charger to be on sale about March 1st, but as it is a new product there may be some delays. Best Regards, hmmm, just got another e-mail from another guy there... Sunnyvale is our main company headquarters. Our component parts are fabricated in Japan and assembled together in China. Our Charging systm(sic), the BMS01 Charger will be available for purchase around Mid February to early March 2011. Guess I'll watch for a while before I jump on it. I do like their idea of different shape cells for a proper fit. |

Wondering if a battery like this reduces all the nasty corrosion you tend to get in and around that area? Even with AGM batteries, the battery box and stuff in the area tends to get ate up over time. Would the lack of H2 production perhaps reduce that tendency? Of course with any kind of leak there's not much worse than H2SO4 and wet metal. |
