I know most auto water pump bearing are sealed, but what about our 1125 motors? My water pump seems to be squeeking possibly from distilled water conbined with water wetter and/or engine ice (can't remember what I put in)--just considering moving back to regular antifreeze for its lubricating properties with possibly an added conditioner.

Obviously if the bearing is sealed, results might not be what I am hoping for....

Anyone know the capacity of the cooling system? I drained this morning by the lower bolt on the water pump and I had about a quart and half in the jug and maybe another half a quart on the ground. Doesn't seem like enough...

i start mine up with the lower end of the r/side radiator hose disconnected, feed clear water with a hose into the water pump opening at the thermostat and run until clear water comes out the radiator hose. i then quit adding water and keep the bike running until most of the water quits running out the hose. shut off motor, reattach hose and then fill radiator with proper mixture of coolant, start bike and keep adding while running until full. cap it, service overflow, go for a ride and check level after returning. service as necessary.

Thanks Ozzie...so I am not clear on the "water pump opening at the thermostat". Is this pulling another hose off to gain access to this opening?}

2 quarts is about right - you can double check your owner's manual. I check every fall to make sure 2 quarts come out when I drain it for the winter.

The water pump bearing gets its lubrication from the coolant, if you run engine ice type products, you need to ad a water pump lubricant to the system or you will tear up the bearing.

Any suggestions for a water pump lube? It seems it's tough to track down at the local stores...pep boys, kragen and napa had nothing specific to lube the water pump.

Long time ago, 2 years?, an Anony said NOT to run one of the 2 main EG substitutes, one was OK tho.
I didn't pay attention since I just run Ethylene Glycol.

I remember that as well. I think Anony was correct. I partially drained my coolant this morning and there were signs of an eaten seal as well as the ever present severe squeeking of the water pump upon starting.

You could look into Water Wetter, or Amsoil coolant boost. I can't say for sure but believe they have lubricating properties. Would be worth a e-mail to Redline or Amsoil.

my water 09's water pump started weeping. took it to the dealer and after 20 min on the phone with presumably (buell tech support) they put the updated outer bearring/seal/lube package on order for me.

dunno if your squeaky waterpump is under warranty or not ... might be worth looking into before the poo hits the fan ... or should i say water hits the impeller?

Bike is not under warranty unfortunately. Soooo.....what for those gear heads, what is the likely outcome of letting a water pump issue go untreated?}
