What's the general concensus - is the steering stem capnut a 9mm allen fitment or is it 3/8".. I don't currently have either but am just about to order one.. 9mm will probably be easier for me to source here in the UK, but I'm sure I can find either on the internet Thanks in advance |

OK cool thanks.. Found a eBayer selling a 1/2" Drive 3/8" Allen key socket which looks perfect (although I do have some old 3/8" drive wrenches around somewhere).. Thanks again |

Um, this is a pretty ordinary bit. A whole set of SAE drives at the hardware store isn't $20. Get a 3/8ths set so you have compatibility with your torque wrench Torque spec on that cap nut is something like 40 ft-lbs. Don't forget to loosen all bolts on the top triple and do the cap nut first. Can you order internationally? Dirt cheap: http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware-Hand-Tools -Sockets-Accessories/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xggZarmd/R-1006 53635/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051& catalogId=10053 As cheap as a decent set is, you might as well have a set of SAE around for the Buell. The winshield well nuts are 3/32, brake calipers are 5/16th drive, the handle bars are 1/4th, and so on. There's a fair bit of SAE on this bike. A decent tool store, even in the UK, should have this stuff. |

Thanks again I have a pretty comprehensive set of tools in Metric and a reasonable set of SAE too but didn't have one quite that big in SAE.. The vast majority of the SAE bolts "can" be undone with the nearest evuivalent Metric tool, I've had the screen off a couple of times using the T-Bar Metric Allen key set but most Metric sets are in even numbers so I have a number of 8mm keys and 10 mm keys but no 9mm key which would probably have done it.. You're right though, I ought to go through my toolkits and get a full set together, I hate startinga job and finding I don't have the right tool for the job. I needed the 1/2" drive so I can fit it too my air wrench just to break the seal and start it off - interesting that the tools you sen the link to call it a 2/8" drive rather than a 1/4".. You gotta love the Internet, you can find anything on it |

3/8ths drive will do most of what we need on this bike. You really only need a half-inch drive for the clutch basket nut, stator nut, and the axles if some bafoon didn't anti-seize them properly. 5/16th and 8mm are really close (caliper bolts) but outside of that you are going to strip one. Given that quality fasteners themselves cost almost as much as the drives, might as well have the right tool. |

Years ago I had to work on my mom's car, a Plymouth Horizon. I had my full SAE and Metrics out and still used a few BS Whitworth sockets and wrenches on the job. What a POS I like working on the 1125. |
