T.E. Lawrence died after launching his bike into the weeds.
If something as untimely had happened to
Jane Austen, we wouldn't have to suffer through her tortured works: From "Emma"
"You and I need not be afraid. If we set the example, many will follow it as far as they can; though all have not our situations. We have carriages to fetch and convey her home, and we live in a style which could not make the addition of Jane Fairfax, at any time, the least inconvenient....." and on and on and on.
This woman is almost as popular NOW as she ever has been.
It seems many authors of her day delighted in multiplying their negations until they were affirmations.

I prefer a more Orwellian type of NEWSPEAK in a sparse style (as Hemmingway), but ART is ART and IT'S ALL GOOD.

"I feel it is my not unclear duty to refrain from continuance in this message, so I shall find myself, forthwith unloud and unscibbling." Over.

Didn't participate in this weekend's toy run, but watched the parade. 75% of the bikes were cruisers, the vast majority of those being Hardley Abelsons. Most of these were ridden by 50+ badasses without helmets and old ladies on the back covered with snot in the winter windstream. Kinda killed their "cool".

A small minority of...maybe 10 cafe bikes including a sick Moto Guzzi, A contingent of GSXRs and Yam R bikes, about 5o kwakers, a host of BMWs of all vintages and 2 each for Ducati and Buell. Not a Helicon in the group (1320 bikes total in the parade). Lawrence would have noted: No Superiors, no Vincent Black Shadows, No Ariel square 4s.
I bet he would wonder why the new middle aged biker public has such bad taste in motorcycles.

Oh, by the way, Jane Austen thinks newspeak is crimethink.

Big balls but most likely tucked away at that moment.

I was kidding about the aerodynamics, but after reading about Rollie, the bathing suit really was an aero consideration. Geez... 150 mph while looking down at the black line. Being a thinker and unconventional, it's no surprise he didn't like HD. And I think maybe his balls were cemented to the fender so he didn't slide around.

Dont forget he was English and from what I recall of the story, it was HOT that day in Bonneville... our western dry heat that must've felt like being in a toaster to him. I'm sure that contributed to the genius idea of stripping to his skivvies (would he have done it if it was 50 degrees outside? Doubt it).
Nonetheless, the always fascinating thing about this much-reproduced image is how people react to it. Motorcyclists almost always marvel at the man's courage, determination and commitment... non-motorcyclists almost always use this as continuing evidence that we're all f'ing nuts.

Rollie Free was not English or British. Born Utah 1900 He joined the Army Air Force as an aircraft maintenance officer during the Second World War; during this time, he was stationed at Hill Field in Utah, where he first saw the Bonneville Salt Flats. In 1945, Free left the Air Force, and resumed racing the soon-to-be defunct Indian motorcycles in long-distance and sprint record attempts, as well as dirt track racing on Triumphs.

Trafford: Really?! Wow. Thanks for the info.

I had it completely wrong -stuck in my head that he was a Brit for some reason (other than the fact that he was associated with Triumph and obviously Vincent in this image).

Apologies to all.

Key joy of life: learning something new every day.
