I know the schedule calls for 12,000 miles but some random postings have mentioned need for adjustment when checked quite a bit earlier. I'm mostly asking because I have about 5,000 on mine and the shops need some work in the "off-season" so if 5-6 thou is not stupid early... |

Mines at 9k, interested in answers on this subject please. was gonna wait till after this season, i normally do about 4-5k so around the 14-15k was when i was planning on checking valve clearance, i have read the the first is the most important, and after that its not as crucial |

I checked mine @ 4000kms cos I was bored & they were all tight, just below spec.. |

Checked mine at 12K and then again at 27K. Both times in spec and no change from 12k- 27k check. Checking at 5K is a little early IMO. |

Did mine at 12k, all were tight, only got to re-use 1 shim. |

Per the Service Manual, the engine needs to be "rotated" to access the front cylinder to check valves, and replace spark plug. How difficult is it to rotate the engine? |

For an experienced mechanic, 2.5 hours, maybe a little less. My first go around with it, I took my time, a bunch of pics and in general I loafed around. I think I had it down within 3 hours, even with all the slacking. The actual valve check, writing down clearances, shim removal and measurements, putting it all back, maybe another 1/2 hour. Trip to the dealer for new shims, then another 3 hours to button it all up and fire it up again. I actually took 3 days to do it all since I was working 2nd shift at the time. I was being kinda lazy. Took it apart one day, ran to the dealer the next, then put it together on Friday as I recall. I'm thinking about lifting off the frame next time instead of rotating the motor. I'm due for it anyway, so I might do it in another month or so. |

And again... Because of a few on this and other boards, I decided to do mine at just over 4000 miles. I'm VERY glad I did. All of the valves were tight, and a couple were "very" tight. I bought shims to put the clearance on the loose side. I've got the bike apart now for a stator change and valve adjustment... The rear cylinder, all the valves are about .001" (American values!) loose, no worries. Will get to the front this weekend. The bike has just over 15,300 miles on it. So yea, as I said...I'm VERY glad I went at it sooner rather than later..! Mike |

Daft question, but what actually happens if they are too tight or loose, does it wear the camshafts or valves, or both ? |

From my experience with quads that use shim valves, when the valves get tight, the vehicle is hard to start, and when they are really tight, the vehicle will not start. |

Too tight, I believe the valves won't close completely. At 12k mine were tight but in spec. At 25k I replaced 6 of 8 shims for mid-loose fit. Be very careful with the shims, DO NOT DROP IN MOTOR!!! I spent 3 days with arthroscopic surgical scopes and magnet tools looking for one I dropped. I wasn't about to split the motor.

Mine currently starts on the button, I'll keep a close watch but think I'll get summer 2011 out the way and drop the motor next winter and get frame insulated and painted. |

I look at listed maintenance schedules as just a guideline for your typical scenario of operation...There are so many different variables that come into play with each and every motorcycle considering usage, conditions, and build, that there will be a variance in when a valve adjustment should be performed on each and every different motorcycle, typically the schedule should fall into play, but with that being said, some 1125's will vary, as most motorcycle valve adjustments do and will. If you posses the resources, time, and ability to do a complete PM session on a motorcycle from time too time, regardless of schedules or mileage, I don't see where that could hurt at all...There is a level of being a bit "anal" with it I guess though...LOL! |
