Finally a little time for a race report. Thursday was consumed with getting 3 bikes through tech inspection and all the attendant paperwork. The Buell went through with barely a glance as it already had a logbook and no radical changes. The Turbo Seca was wacked because the rear fender extended beyond the rear tire(removed it)and the height in the rear was too high(the rear of the stock seat had a rise in it to keep passenger from slipping off--pulled back cover and removed seat foam). The 50cc Derbi needed metal valve stems so I was breaking beads on tires and putting in valve stems, one thursdya and the other early friday morn as the autoparts store only had 3,2 for Snail and 1 for me. Friday morning we took the Seca and the Derbi to the line withy Henrik on the Seca and James the Derbi.Henrik ran the Seca to 108,he said it pulled very strong all the way to redline in 5th,just needed higher gearing. The Derbi only eeked out a 61 mph run. This bike was the only disappointment for the meet, multiple runs and gearing/carb changes never netted any gains.I need a 2 stroke guru for next year. Friday afternoon we took the Buell to the line. This bike had been running great and took off well, but in 3rd gear it just ran out of gas,and I pulled off the track. Back in the pits I diagnosed a bad fuel pump, and by the time I made the parts house they were closed. Saturday morning we got the Seca out of impound and Henrik made a back-up run of 111,so he had a record in the books.MPS-750 BF.Changed classes and dumped the gas so we could run the gas class and back in line with James piloting.(Philly and Jen were busting butt finding me a fuel pump--big thanks) At the starting line I was advising James to take it easy for his first speed run down the course,--and then he blasts off a 125mph run--damn!!Back to impound. He backed it up with a 123mph run so he is in the books with a new MPS 750 BG record.YEEHAW,2 down.Damn proud of that kid!! After getting fuel pump on the Buell we made 2 more sucky runs and found a kinked fuel feed line hiding under the fire sleeve and then a turbo charge tube off.First good run was sunday afternoon and I babied it to a 167mph speed, just happy to make a full run and the bike was sounding good, off to impound. So,monday, the last day to race and a short day at that.First run netted a 173 run as I had to back off throttle twice as it got real close to a tankslapper, but it pulled like a freight train crossed line at 6500.Good for a new record in MPS 1650 BPF,old record was 122+. Changed classes and gas and back in line.I dialed up the steering dampner and gave it some more throttle staying to the left side of the course away from where the cars run, blasted off a 177.719 run.It ran straight as an arrow and we saw 6900 across the line still pulling strong. Back in line for the back up I was so excited to run over 175 and get the B license I forgot to run on the left side and again had the very unsettling experience of dancing bars at 170+.Backed off 2 again and ran a last run of 174.5.If I had had more time I would have changed the front sprocket and run the long course,I really think the S-2 had a head of steam to run into the 180's.Oh,well,2 records was satisfying enough and there is certainly next year. 4 records on 2 out of 3 bikes was not bad. Another year of Team Elves racking up the records, from Aaron to Ray and with all the efforts of Choptop,Terry Parsley and Snail, all the 130 and 150 club entrants,we made another lasting impression on everyone at the WOS.

FMJ: it just figures that i bent my wheels chasing YOU of all people!!! Rex, thanks, it sounds like you guys and gals had a ton o' fun, as usual. one of these days i'll make it back there for the festivities. i've done 150 (indicated) on my VFR, on pavement, under perfect conditions, and it seemed pretty darned fast. can't imagine what it must be like rocketing across a bed of salt (with a tankslapper just waiting to bite, eh Jim?) at a buck eighty or so. can't be easy, that's for sure. i've got the 10/26 BattleTrax marked on my calendar; is that the one you're referring to? FB ps: i hope you are healing quickly and well. |

Finally back at home with time to sit at the computer again. What a great week I had. Just a couple of days before I left, I wasn't going. A little message left here to ring Aaron, then an ear chewing on the phone from Paul, and I was ready to get on a plane. Sure glad I did. To all of you that helped make it happen, again, from the bottom of my heart I say "THANK YOU". I only hope that I can reciprocate one day. Aaron kindly let me take his ride to work M2 out and have a shot at the 150 mph club. (It's a fairly faaast ride to work M2....) First serious pass put in a 147. Back to the pits and Aaron switched on the computer. "You need to change the front sprocket" he said. OK. A bit of haggling with Dale from 'The Sportster List' team, and help from FMJ, saw Dale lose the one from his race bike, and gain one of FMJs spares. A big flurry of activity saw it together just before the 5.00pm line close, and I was able to put down a 152 pass. Next morning I guess I was a bit keen to go, because the officials found me in the line behind the backup qualifiers. They sent me back to wait with the rest...... dammit. Once the backup runs were done though, I was first in line and managed to squeeze out a 153 pass, and thank you very much for my membership. From then on I tried to help in the pits, chase vehicles etc and not break anything. So far so good, but more was to come. Sunday, I find Aaron looking at me and saying "Where's your leather's? You want to ride the race bike?" You're kidding I thought. Does a bear shit in the woods? So I said "Um, ok....." Reality set in. For those of you that haven't heard the RRS2 run, it sort of reminds me of one of those nasty pissed off dogs that you can come across occasionally. You know, the ones that seem to be saying "Come closer sunshine, I'm going to have your leg for dinner..." Evil suckers. The RRS2 is a bit like them. I didn't have some much as butterflies in my stomach, more like I'd swallowed a K1 fight. I remained cool, calm and poised on the outside though. At least I tried too..... Once I got the thing rolling off the line though, it became a whole lot of fun. The way that bike makes it's power is awesome. I've ridden a Hyabusa and it is civilised and tame by comparison. Really. That Buell is amazing! So a 175 mph run and I'm eligible for my 'B' license. How cool is that considering a few days earlier I was going to be watching it all on the computer LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE THAT DIDN'T GO! Two moment's that have really stuck in my mind from the weekend are these. First was going to the timing tent and telling them that I wasn't actually Richard Nallin and could they please change the name on the slip so that I could register for my license? One of the ladies asked my name and when I told her said "Oh! You're Peter from Amsterdam! How's your new baby girl and the new house coming along? We thought you weren't going to be able to make it this year." Could have knocked me over with a feather. These people have to be the nicest bunch to ever organise a tea party. They really go out of their way to make you feel like you're part of the family. It's a great feeling. The second, and only because it happened later, was seeing the look on Aaron's face when I picked him up after he took the RRS2 for a ride. As we all know, this bloke is generally seriously focused. Now he looked like someone that had just had a HUGE amount of fun. Just like a kid in a candy shop. Couldn't shut him up in the car on the way back to the pits Aaron, at the risk of repeating myself (duh, like I really care ) you should ride that bike more often. It's a great tonic and THANK YOU so much for letting me have a ride on it too. You're a good bloke.

Peter, thanks for making me feel like i was there. within two minutes after meeting Aaron and Susie the first time (Taos, New Mexico in '99 for a BRAG ride with Erik) he was tossing me the keys to his bike and asking me to take it for a ride to see what i thought. what i thought was what a genuinely friendly thing to do. glad to see that success hasn't gone to his head. best regards, glad you're home safe and sound, and thank you to ALL who make us stuck here at the computer feel like we're not. Damn, you guys are embarrassing me, stop it. I don't think anyone was as happy as Paul after he made the 150 club though. Peter and I coached him to death, put the fear of God into him about how explosive that bike is (and it IS). Paul went out and executed an absolutely flawless pass and came back with a 156 time slip. damn, he should've been the one giving lessons! Seriously, he took off perfectly, didn't get it sideways (that's more difficult than it sounds on that bike epecially in the first 3 gears), hit all his shift points perfectly, and leveled it off at exactly the right speed. It was a thing of beauty. |

Aaron, kinda like I felt cautioning James on his first pass on the Turbo Seca--take it easy your first time, just take it to 10K slow--and when I hear the MPH announced he blasted by Henrik's fast time.So much for my coaching, haha!!!! |

Jim Witt - My pop and I missed you. I've been at work training the last week. The bike ran poorly the entire time and I don't understand why, yet. I was disappointed the the speeds and debated not taking open records. |

Vr1203, Ya shoulda been there Aaron, If the cap fits..... Roc, I really found that running the boost and fuel pressure gauges beside each other was a good thing. It shows up fuel delivery problems easily. |

Pete ,I can't remember if you had the Mikuni or the stocker on your Buell?Roc is using the stocker, that may be the key to his problems--- |

FMJ, I also used a CV. I was going to modify a Mikuni to fit, but ended up building this other engine configuration before I did. The CV is fairly sensitive to correct fuel pressure though. The manual says 1-1/2 to 2psi above boost so I kept mine at 2psi. My regulator worked great. It always stayed at 2psi above no matter what the boost pressure was. |
