I read a lot of threads that mention the propane test to find a bad intake manifold gasket. Before I blowup the garage can someone describe to me the best method to use and how this process works? |

Use WD-40 with the spray tube, if the idle speed drops you've found the problem. |

It also helps to crank the idle up between 2-3k. |

Waft some propane at the head/manifold joint. You don't need to have the torch valve cranked. Folks have used lots of different chemicals (WD40, carb cleaner, starting fluid, etc), but really, you don't want to spray anything that will affect the seals themselves or their ability to slide on the smooth manifold surfaces. That joint is ALWAYS moving around as the cylinders grow taller and and grow away from each other, then shrink shorter and get closer, as the engine gets hotter and colder. Not a lot, but enough to affect how the seal seats. Anything you spray that makes the seal gummier in time on that joint will affect sealing. If it is leaking, and you replace them, use sylglide (sp) and clean those machined surfaces well prior to reassembly. Al |
