So i wrecked by bike in the spring, completely destroyed the instrument cluster and had some other minor damage to mostly plastics, oh and a broken femur :P so im able to find a great deal on most of the parts i need (used from riders here, thanks guys!). but for the ignition replacement i want a new one, chances are i wouldnt find on to match my seat and gas cap anyway. so i call on of the dealers listed on the site here. he was a great help, friendly and knew what he was talking about. i get my ignition in the mail with some other assorted parts, and the first thing i do is pull my surviving key (the one that matches my gas cap and seat) out of the drawer and try it in the ignition... no good. i check the key numbers, they dont match. dammit. so i call the dealership back, the parts guy apologizes and sends a label out for me to send the ignition back, and i do. a month later i get a call from the dealer about the ignition, he tells me that the factory will not ship him the right part, after trying a few times. they refuse to match the number. They tell the dealer that they have alot of stock that they need to sell, or some such... Is that the best that the company can do? This is terrible business, and im disgusted. the HD dealer couldnt even get the right part for me! I would like to thank the dealer for working on the problem with me for so long and trying to get me the part i needed, in the end it was no fault of theirs. so it sounds like i get to carry 2 keys, one for the ignition and 1 for the gas tank/seat... but i wont like it, and i sure as hell am not happy about it. |

you could ask a locksmith to rekey the lock. |

I second the locksmith recommendation. I had some similar zadi locks re-keyed for my Triumph a few years ago and it was pretty reasonable. |

these parts had to be assembled somehow by factory, right? so that means they can be disassembled? can you take apart your busted ignition, get the parts you need and replace them into the other one? |

I had the same experience as you on a KLR650. I took both keys to a locksmith and had him make one key with the a "gas cap side" and an "ignition" side. The only PITA then was putting the key in correctly (of course, not hard to flip it around), but it's a cheap way to get back to one key. |

I ran into the same problem with ordering matched locking components. Even though Buell provides key codes, there is nowhere in the ordering process that you can specify the keycode where they will recognize it. For H-D keys, you include the key code as a note with the line item. Since you can do that for the Buell parts, you think that they will take note of it when they fill the order, but they don't. It's aggravating! |
