Yep, ran out of skill before I ran out of speed on the second part of the "s".

Hit the gravel and went down. Somehow I ended up beneath the bike, hmm, did that last time too, so I'm pretty bruised up. We slid for about 150 feet on the grass. Fortunately, that's all that was there.

Broke: mirror, clutch, turn signal, oil cover.

Tried calling CAA but I was in a dead zone. Fortunately, again that word, the clutch lever would fit over the cable and stay sort of in place. So I was able to ride the 45 minutes home. Then the streets were blocked off for the Santa Claus parade - turn off the bike, walk across the street and restart…

Really big bruise on my head, hopefully the glare will keep the missus from noticing…

Any crash you can walk away from is a good one.

Nice couple stopped to help, former OPP (trooper to US) but he didn't call so no report, no insurance claim. I'm on holidays this week, so built in recovery time.

The head bruise would have me a bit worried, anything that translates that much energy through the helmet should be checked out as soon as possible.

I'm glad you're O.K. Gravel will get ya every time in a curve. Been there and done that myself.

Get your head checked for sure!

Thanks for your concerns, I'm assuming you're all being nice.

Back is feeling pretty good. Pain is mainly in my left ribs so something is broke/cracked/badly bruised. Doesn't really matter since I know from kickboxing it's all the same treatment: nothing, just advil and chest expansions.

Left elbow is bruised, no pain, and bicep is also bruised and stiff.

There's a small bruise on the inside of my left knee and shin.

Yeah, that head bruise: I'm trying not to draw attention to it which would then draw attention to the crash. Rather not answer those questions. There's no pain, headache, swelling or nausea, eyes are good, neck is good. Anything else I should watch out for?

Main point I want to share is All the gear, All the time.

I'm still surprised that any certified helmet would leave a bruise without pretty much splitting open.

Frankly, I'm surprised as well. Ten years of mx and all sorts of landings, my head first on asphalt last year, none of those left a bruise.

There were some other accounts when I googled it.

I was wearing a new this spring, Joe Rocket Atomic. It's supposed to have the ECE 22-05.

Last year, I was wearing a KBC, basically the same model as the Buell Flame. That time was head first, very loud, and then my shoulder with enough force to break the collarbone and do third degree muscle damage. No bruise on my head though.

I won't be replacing it with another Joe Rocket.

Interesting development.

After my last post here, I emailed Joe Rocket. At 10:30 pm, last night I got an intelligent email from the president of Joe Rocket Canada offering further discussion.

Gotta admit that's pretty good customer relations.

I think it's probably fair to keep any discussion private for now.

His comments seem honest and his concern for riders using his products seems genuine.

I think it's more important that he's invited further discussion.

Which I'm about to have.

I'm glad you're upright and recovering. Take it easy for a while and heal up.

Joe Rocket seems to be a stand up company. I have had a few conversations with them in the past. I lost the zip off portions of my Buell Adventure jacket. Buell and HD didn't provide any replacement panels. Since the jacket was made by Joe Rocket, I gave them a call. They didn't have any Buell panels, but provide me with some from their jacket that the Buell one was modeled after. The only problem was that the two jackets used different zippers. Since this was the case, they gave me the panels at half price, to help with the tailoring costs necessary to replace the zippers.
That was pretty cool of them.

Hopefully they will take care of you too.

Saw the doctor today. He wasn't too concerned with the bruising so that's good. He figures a rib is broken since there is swelling. Waiting for x-ray results but all they really tell is the time to heal. And prescribed drugs, little ones.

Had a closer look at my helmet for the discussion. While I don't recall any head impact, it's obvious there was some. There is grass in the visor gearing. The top rear vent is broken off. The scuffing and (light) scratches show at least three different angles of travel.

That there is why everyone should wear a helmet. No helmet and the noggin is cracked.

Update: just got off the phone with the president of Joe Rocket. He's tried several times to reach me and caught me today.

Sounded like a sincere individual and asked how I was. We had a nice chat.

He's offered to replace the helmet which is more than I expected.

I'd also contacted MotoGP's Mobile Clinic and received an answer back from them that my type of bruising is infrequent but happens.

I've got to say I'm really impressed with Joe Rocket's customer service.

I have been looking for a new helmet since mine mysteriously got lost in my house somewhere. The Joe Rocket products are in my top five choices, and this type of customer service makes them even more appealing. NEATO!

That's really good to hear...I have a couple of Joe Rocket Jackets and pants, and like them a lot. News like this makes it an easy decision to stay with them when it comes time to get new gear!

Helmet arrived. It's better looking in real life. It's a really nice pearl colour behind all the graphics.

I met with the president of Joe Rocket at the TO bike show. He's a very down to earth person and very involved in motorcycles.
