Race weekend at Miller became very exhausting.Yet to complete a single lap on my bike for a variety of reasons.Fridays practice was spent trying to rectify an issue with the brakes dragging and then locking up.Thankfully while I was in a straight line, and gradually enough to loft the rear wheel, but that all. The cause after much cleaning of parts was in the master cylinder(brembo) where a bleedback oriface was plugged. Saturday things got worse.Back to the same issue as the raceweekend before which I thought I might have rectified. The bike would make it to the back straight pulling on both cylinders, but with some hesitations before firing on only one cylinder and having to limp back to the pits. We discovered a air intake sensor missing. Installed a larger ,higher capacity and completely charged battery. The same scenario occurred this weekend. We loaded it up and put it on the dyno. After just a couple of pulls the bike stopped running and would appear to have lost compression in the rear cylinder. Time to pull the heads. What has happened? |

Spent Thanksgiving weekend stripping the bike down and getting the motor out. The crank is moving the pistons but not the cams.My guess is that the miss is a fuel issue. I will send the injectors out for cleaning. Check fuel pump pressure. I will pull the oil pump cover and cam housing and see what it is that is driving the cams. Possibly the crank has sheared there but hopefully I may find something less severe. |

Removed all the bolts on the oilpump case and the other 3 at the top that specifically hold the cam case but nothing is budging. I see in a post on xlforum that the mating surface between the cam housing and the crankcase is metal to metal. Not so on mine, It looks like some type of sealant has been used. am I missing anything besides the obvious allen bolts,or is it just this sealant holding everything together? |

The crankshaft sheared on the camside right at the bearing race. Trying to post a photo but having issues uploading. |

Have any of xbrr guys seen this one before? |

I've seen that on Harley motors caused by a bad casting. Not sure if the RR piece is billit or cast. Did it trash the top end when cam timing changed? Michael at Erik Buell Racing told me he had plenty of RR parts. |

After a tough year financially where I had to give racing away I have finally been able to rebuild the xbrr. Hdfr sent me crankparts and Darkhorse Crankworks built a new crank. Latus motors performed the rebuild and I have finally brought it home to install. I was very lucky that the valves and heads were not damaged.Erik Buell Racing were awesome in supplying parts at very reasonable pricing. Many thanks to those guys. One of the injectors was bad and will be replaced. Looking forward to finding the time to buff out the beast. |

Great to see you persevere. I really like that engine, but it needs so special attention for racing. Hope you eventually bond with it, sooner more than later. |

I had the same thing happen to a crank at Road America in 2008. When mine broke, it did take out the valves and break one head. You got lucky for sure. |

The plan is to get it buffed and maybe roll it out for an AHMRA or Track day. Definitely not a Club Racer. We all have to have our little treasure's, right? |

Finally getting some time to work in the shop.Got the motor back in and might get back to it this weekend. ATF or Synthetic ATF in primary for Slipper Clutch? Buffed, means race prepped so that she is ready to roll if my wife lets me "out". |

Sweet, now I've got a new word to use. Whose slipper do you have in there ? I have an STM in an XB and use 'Redline Racing Synthetic ATF' in it. All of my other XB's (with non-slippers) use Amsoil 20/50 in both the engine & primary, including the RR, with both stock & 'Alto' plates. So exactly how fast are you guys spinning these RR's that the cranks are failing in such a grand fashion ? |

STM slipper.thanks on the redline recommendation. I will try it. Are you running a front cylinder head temp sensor on your rr. Mine doesn't have one and I wondered why. Also I can't locate the wheel speed sensor that is called out on wiring diagram. Where would it normally be? Also where do you get the rr (blue) filters ? Been a while since I had the bike at the track, but think I was running it to 8 grand. There cannot be that much stress on the crank where it is failing.it is pushing valves and oil pump. I think it has to be casting problem. I have another spare crank and rods, but really don't want to have to use it. Nice chatting. |
