it was and it seems to help although anony told us that the r/r isn't grounded to it's case so because of that it shouldn't help but according to riders here it shows some improvement...

I can see why some dealers might add an external ground wire from a grounding point to the VR case. I recently bought a 2009 1125R Electrical Diagnostic Manual and the paragraph describing VR Inspection in the Troubleshooting Section 3.3 gives conflicting information to what Anony said in another post about the VR case needing to be grounded.

The ESM says the "VR ground needs a clean, tight connection for proper grounding" and to use an ohmmeter to check from the regulator body to a known good ground. Well, it's been shown by me in another post that the VR case is isolated to all its wires. So, how can grounding the VR case with an external wire improve VR function? Only by ensuring the case is mounted properly with thermal grease for heat transfer to its heat sink I'd imagine. Electrically, it won't help function, unless the VR I tested had some kind of internal blown circuit to the case (possible but unlikely).

This manual has further discrepancies regarding the VR case ground. To wit:
-- Fig 3-12 Charging System Circuit wire diagram which shows no ground symbol from the VR case to chassis ground
vs
-- Appendix Fig B-6 Chassis Grounds: 2009 1125 Models wire diagram which does show a ground symbol from the VR case to chassis ground,
vs
-- Appendix Fig B-7 Main Chassis Wiring Harness: 2009 1125 Models wire diagram which does not show a ground symbol from the VR case to chassis ground.

So, there is some misinformation in the Factory Electrical Service Manual which may be causing some dealers to route extra ground wires which may not help solve problems.

If anybody has an unmounted 09 VR that they can do a quick ohmmeter check from the case to its wires, that'd be good to know if the case is indeed isolated. I suspect it will, but then, the VR I tested was likely defective because it wasn't regulating properly.

Just a thought, I do not know this so am asking, could the improvement seen from adding a ground wire come from effectively adding a further heat sink, the wire taking heat away from the VR ?

Not so much a ground wire... it would carry heat away, but not that much. But in terms of case to frame mo0unting, all the things that would make for a good electrical ground would make for a good thermal transfer as well.

Sooooo..... Why do you go by "Sparky", anyway?

Great detective work!

Ha ha, but not quite. It's a term of endearment bestowed on fellow Road Captains when $#!+ happens while doing your best to fix your friend's headlight two states from home and they don't let you disconnect the battery. Guess what can happen... :o

Rex, was the indication "Charging Problem" or "System Voltage"?
