I went to see the damage done from my recent crash. Top neck bearing is gone and looks like the shaft is bent up.

You're the guy that thought it was cool to ride around with your heels on the foot pegs dragging your toes around curves right? |

How hard did you hit to get that to break? |

He's the one that thought his steering head bearings screwed up. He went over the bars on a track somewhere. Here's the thread. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/605250.html?1290476086 |

Were the front brakes OK? Several people suspected the front brakes. |

Badlionsfan yeah Im the guy that drags pegs, knees and boots. I did a high side not anything to do with dragging pegs wheelies or other crazy stuff. I had the front end lock up when I was going strait doing 30-50 mph. The front brakes seemed to work. The reservoir was full. When I got the tire in the air the the pads where not sticking to the rotor. tested brakes and they still worked. The wheel bearings seem to move freely and are sitting good in the forks. The front rim is bent. I cant believe that the top neck bearing is totally gone. The shaft has dents and scratches where the bearing should be. |

I just cannot figure out how a failed steering head bearing could throw you over the bars. I could see a loss of stability and steering, but not locked up front wheel and going over the bars. I want to understand so I can make sure it does not happen to me. Any theories? |

You said you had it in the shop for a front end noise not too long ago. Could they have screwed up your neck bearing? |

before this happened the bike was getting hard to steer. When I was cornering in the turns it was hard to push the bars and it was slow at coming back to center. at the time I was thinking it was cold and needed more time to warm up. It never acted that bad until that day. I had my neck bearing go bad before on my xb and it started out the same way.It was like some was pushing back on the bars. right before i crashed the bike had a sudden big shake in the bars and the bike did a endo sending be flying. i was going strait and not coming out of a conner. |

Wow. That's scary. It's just one more thing to add to the preflight checklist. Actually, I was already checking how the steering felt each time before riding. I'll be paying closer attention to it. How many miles were on the odometer? |

I had just got my xb out from getting the neck bearing changed by the dealer. I brought in my 1125r for them to check out the bearing. The front end would pop when hard front stopping. They said it was still good. The xb did the same and they replaced the neck bearing. I have had never had this problem before with my other bikes. |

I'd say your dealer dropped the ball on this one. Have you talked to them about it? I wonder what their response would be. |

How long you had the after market levers on???? Herd/seen if there a little to big they don't let the master bleed back and lock up the front Brake. |

Wow. What a nightmare! Like hitting a deer but with less chance to avoid. You said the reservoir is full...but it's not TOTALLY full, right? There is still some airspace in there? Any evidence of the tire making contact with the frame/engine? What if the head bearing was overtorqued and cracked the housing? That would make it steer funny until the housing let loose. Then forks fold under, tire meets frame, tire stops turning...bam! Just brainstorming here. Brake system overpressure/sticking or something in the fork mounting/linkages that was cracked and getting ready to let go. I can't think of anything else that would lead to a front wheel lock-up and still give you the funky-steering feeling before it dropped you. Keep us updated, please. I gotta know what caused this. FWIW, Putting on a wrong front brake lever is a known way to cause a front tire lockup, as stated earlier in the thread. I'm not saying that is necessarily what happened, but objectively it sounds like the third most plausible scenario behind "operator error" and "unseen road hazzard". (and for the record, I have been down on a street bike three times... the first two were due to operator error, the third was unseen road hazzard, if you count frost in the front yard as a road hazzard ). |

>>> Top neck bearing is gone and looks like the shaft is bent up. And the frame is toast. I concur; likely cause is improperly fitting brake lever. |

The front bearing can't be completely gone. Once the casting broke, the beaing probably just dropped down to the bottom of the stem. When I hit a dog back in July, my frame broke in the exact same spot. Bike was totalled. |
