I have a 99 X1 with the stock shock, well it was replaced, but still stock. It is starting to bottom out on things I don't think it should. I am not very knowledgeable on suspension parts, so any ideas or tweaks that anyone can offer would be great. Thanks |

Are you certain that the new shock is the same as the old one? There were several configurations of shock/swing arm in '99. I had to extend the length of the only shock still available for my '99 S3. Yours might be too long. Does the bike sit at the same height as with the first shock when at rest? Does your weight bring it down from full height by an inch or two? |

Try first measuring the front to rear bolt center to center distance please. |

I am pretty sure I got the style shock that came with the bike since I had to wait a while for the shop to locate one. They did not believe me about that upgrade even though I had the bulletin with me. It rode just fine till recently. It measures 14 5/8" from center of bolt to bolt. Also, I just noticed a lot of oil coating the reservoir. This may be the cause, again, I don't know much about shocks. |

It sounds like it may be shot. Again. Especially if it used to ride fine and now does not and with the appearance of the oil. Below is from another post. Babired, This is from my notes on the M2's. The M2L's (2001-2002)used a (ctr. to ctr) 15 1/4". The old M2's used a 16.5" and the newer M2's used a 14.7" shock. The older shocks came with a straight bracket and the newer ones used the boomerang style which had the mount hole further back to accommodate the shorter bolt pattern of the newer shock. Hope this helps for your X1R. Also the 2000 M2 mount # is K0407.8H and the 2001 is K0407.01A1. I believe they basically are the same but the 2001 has an additional hole for the regulator mount upgrade. (Message edited by Buell_Bert on November 30, 2010) |

Thanks James for your insight. Final questions then for this issue. What are the chances this part will be covered under a warranty of some sort? I don't even think this shock has 3500 miles on it, and it's not like I go bouncing around in fields. Also, can they be rebuilt? And if so, what will I need. Thanks.
