I have tried three pipes and two race ecms and finally came up with a winner. My take is once you install any open pipe that unrestricts flow you loose smooth power. I've run three styles to date and they all did the same thing. * made my bike jerky on off throttle * decel is horrible * blow out my eardrums * on the throttle out of corners its clunky
Now that I've installed the stock exhaust and a pump gas ecm I can honestly say all the hype about exhausts is just a waste of money. I don't think its feasible to pay big money for something that makes a bike run worse than it did. Has anyone had similar results? The bike runs like glass with the stocker.
What I don't understand is why this motor is so clunky without backpressure? I do like my r and it's torque but why doesn't my inline get clunky with a aftermarket pipe?
My bike runs great with FMF pipe & E.br FMF tune, I dont mind that it is extremely loud at least the cars can hear me coming. I will never go back to the god awful looking stock pipe.
It just seems once you loose any sort of backpressure you loose so many qualities. On the flip side I strongly feel that if someone made a longer pipe or side mount / undertail design that the backpressure would be there and it would flow at high rpm .I could be wrong ?
The exhaust blowing on my rear wheel just plain pissed me off. I like what a few have done with the relocation. After buying new hero blue wheels for the bike there was no way I could let them look like my dirty stockers. The Barkers is loud enough to drive me nuts. Maybe it is just the ECM remap alone but with the Barker and the ECM my coolant temps went down 30-40 degrees from 220+ to 180ish. The bike rides smoother for me in all areas. That has changed my whole outlook on this bike. I have nothing but good things to say about the tuned ECM and Barkers pipe aside from it being a noisy fawker.
i never went to any of the aftermarket cans. none of them sounded good to me or seemed to 'fit' the bike. the QD doesn't even look right. and i don't think the stocker is any more awful looking than any other part of the bike.
i'm sending mine off to Dadams for an MT-1 i know it's alot to pay for someone to hack-out some baffle plates, and re-weld, but as i've found out in my own experiences; it's waaay easier to pay for it to be done right the first time. unless you got alot of time on your hands and all the right tools for the job.
I am with you. If anything I would only modify the stocker. I am thinking the MT-1 or Hawk Performance.
With mine I should have "left well enough alone". The one and only aftermarket pipe I ran fouled my plugs. I was lucky I did not drop a valve. But I did not have a modified ECM like Erik Buell Racing to tune it. Anyways I find the stocker doing really well now comparing and ever since I got the plugs changed out and my valves checked. I got my power and smooth driveabilty back.
The one and only bad drawback aside from weight is the exhaust dumping out on the wheel and caliper. A modification for just that is in order period. Soon as I have more time and money I am getting it done. I will get the ecm to go with it as well.
hawk perf kept me waiting all summer with empty promises. don't get me wrong, he is the nicest guy i've ever talked to on teh phone for 45 minutes about exhausts and such; but i think dean has his act together. videos, multiple shots/angles, sound clips and dyno runs.
Personally, I have experienced the complete opposite. With the addition of the Erik Buell Racing ecm and KEDA exhaust, the bike is very smooth in comparison to the stock setup. There is absolutely no hurky-jerky or rough idling anymore. The sound of the pipe is ideal because people know I am around now. Before the pipe, it had become routine for someone to come into my lane or turn in front of me. With the KEDA, very few problems. The pipe is loud but not obnoxiously loud. I absolutely enjoy the overall benefits.
I had a HMF, found it too loud, put the stocker back on and loved how the bike road, then sent it off to he modified and fitted pump gas ECM, now I have the sound I want and bike runs lovely and smooth.
I've been through this on cars and bikes for 20+ years. Unless the OEM exhaust is just terrible, I've found that exhaust work returns very poor bang for the buck, excluding the subjective things like sound.
There was a day when I liked loud, but those days are gone. If I were to do anything to my '09R, it would be with Dean (Adams). I respect that he's supporting the community, and the reviews have been very positive.
My OEM "sheep's bladder" has been hanging on my garage wall since I got the Drummer. Run's better than ever with K&N, Drummer and E.B.R ECM for "open exhaust". I don't even have a Drummer specific tune, got the ECM before they started doing that.
I don't find the Drummer too loud at all, I love the way it barks.
Bang for the buck is where it's at. The top 4 systems in the shootout were within .7 hp of each other and they all show a minimum of 15-20 hp and 10-13 ft/lbs of torque over stock. That was worth around a 13% or more gain, so if that's not enough, then you need a full race system from Erik Buell Racing.
Wow, what exhausts/ECM combo's did you try??? The stock system had very abrupt throttle response and was very "herky jerky". The bike was almost unbearable to ride on a hot summer day because of engine and exhaust heat. With the Barker/Erik Buell Racing ECM and TM velocity stacks the bike is much smoother, runs cooler and makes noticably more power. It feels like a completely different bike now. I would never even think to go back to the stock exhaust. -Tutt
This is a good posting. I appear to be in the minority as I really like the appearance of the OEM unit. What I do not like is the trajectory of the exhaust tips, the weight of the unit, or the volume and quality of the sound. I continue to ponder over whether or not to go aftermarket on my exhaust. I really prefer to not have to repack my exhaust and I do not want to sacrifice ride-ability. From the sound clips I have heard, I like the Keda RT's, Barkers, and Dummer SS. I am still hoping to ride with bikes that have those installed to get a first hand experience of the sound quality. The jury continues to be out.
I like the sound of modified oem exhaust (only tips are changed) and look, when itīs hidden with bellypan. There is enough power and riding smoothness with Fuel Solutions flash and velocity stacks.
If I want ride with a noisy bike, I take my supercharged -86 1150 GSX
Since i put in an FMF on my CR (and getting a new helmet,..Arai Corsair V), me ears have been ringing like crazy. I like that the cars can hear me now, but i might not be able to hang on to that pipe for long before i decide not loosing my hearing is probably a good thing. I dont know how you guys keep the even louder pipes, like D&D.
PS. this is with me using earplug most of the time,...well most of the time when i remember to put them on. (Id hate to think its the 800 dollar helmet).
i put my stocker back on to take the bike to the dyno for a baseline run, it ran crap, need less to say my proper exhaust is back on now
I have an incredibly hard time believing that. I've had my stock exhaust on all season and with the addition of the EB R ECM the bike runs amazingly well. I think you're over exaggerating...
I went back to stock for a cross-Europe 3000 kilometer ride this summer. I knew my Torquehammer would get me pulled in in Switzerland (happened a few years ago on another non-standard exhaust). And Germany is also hot on non standard exhausts too. Anyway it was so nice running standard muffler ( easy on the ears at high speed for 1000 ks straight together with the Erik Buell Racing ECM that I decided to keep the standard one on. Oh yeah.....I have curve outs so the back end stays clean.
My 09 R with standard ecu and catalyst stock pipe ran crap, with ebr-ecu it was miles better, now with non cat stock exhaust and ebr-ecu it runs great.Just wish it was a bit louder though.
