If I was going to spend money on anything I would probably spend it on a Scary Fast carb splitter. That will make the most difference with helping when you roll the throttle on from off idle. As far as shimming the needle, well, that will fatten up the mid-range of the carb, I think that if you have access to the slide diaphragm cover(tank off) then I would procure some needle shims as outlined here as that will improve how the mid-range operates. You will be happy with the results. Now, let me ask this question......You are riding the bike right now.....Right? Because if you are not, don't do a thing other than get it running first, then start building problems into it. (Message edited by swampy on November 26, 2010) |

Swampy is right on his last point: Ride the heck out of it until you find some specific thing you'd like your bike to do better - then change it. Having said that, here's my inevitable two cents: I couldn't tell from the picture you posted what kind of tires you have. However, if you still have the stock Dunlops, lose them as soon as you can. |

I rode mine first before making alterations. I still haven't made alterations, except wearing out the Dumbflops and getting Pirellis |

Mine tops out at 95, with the only alterations being a windscreen (Givi A-602), and bar end weights, and I wasn't planning on altering it from stock in a mechanical way, although the description of the shimming above sounds appealing. I did buy the Pirelli's but haven't put them on yet. I am curious if I will notice the difference in regular, commuting riding. (Message edited by titusand on December 01, 2010) |

Aloha Guys, I'm going to get it at least idling/running smoothly before I try to ride it. I agree that doing mods before getting it running as stock would be premature - I'm just thinking down-the-road. The previous owner seemed to really think re-jetting it would solve its problems. Based on everything I can tell, I think the slow jet is fouled. New jets should be here any day...long shipping times are part of living way out here. Since it's already apart, I'm going to wait and put it back together again once all the bits are here. Sadly the tires are basically new - the rear tire has less than 100 miles - but they are the un-loved Dunlops. I can ruin these learning to ride and then get the Pirellis. It's funny because I have an 1964 Volvo 1800 and the consensus in that community is Pirellis suck on old Volvos. Just goes to show that "good" tires are more application/vehicle specific than people realize. I'll keep you posted as to both my progress riding and getting the Blastocyst up and running well. |

I learned on Dunlops. They taught me to be fearful and tentative upon approaching corners. And post a pic of that P1800. It's one of my favorites! |

Hurrah! Well thanks to all the great information provided by the nice folks on this forum, I got the Blastocyst up and running like a Swiss watch. I think the 1/2 teaspoon of sand I found at the bottom of the float bowl might be the culprit, but who knows? It idles smoothly now and there's no weird throttle hesitation. But the BEST PART is I took it out and cruised around my neighborhood! It was my first time riding a 'real' motorcycle, and I had a huge smile on my face the whole time...really looking forward to learning to ride well/taking my test etc. I'm pretty cautious by nature, so I'll be careful out there for sure. So many thanks to everyone here and those who posted detailed pictures of the various repairs I needed to do. All your help really helped ME and I truly appreciate it. And thanks for the nice compliments on my Volvo 1800! All the stuff I learned about its SU carbs helped me on the Blast...so it's cool the way knowledge transfers like that. And thanks Magster...the photo was taken using 'light painting"...it's pretty simple. You tripod the camera and open the shutter for a LONG time...30 seconds or so, then you can walk around in the picture firing off a hand-held flash. You kinda just play until you get it right. It's a great way to light up large spaces like churches, building, etc. with just one light. OK well guess what I'm gonna be doing for the next few days? thumpthumpthump |

Kauai - wooo whooo, my guess is that you will be out on reconnaissance missions, learning every curve in your backyard, gaining a little knowledge, experience and confidence with each mile. Have fun, we're all happy for you! I love taking pics when out riding but lack the real good equipment. I can enjoy the talents in these pages, badweb has some great photographers. Keep us posted.
