Once upon a time I had some decent ones, but that was a long time ago. If you really want to get down to the nuts and bolts level of how an EFI system works, start researching the MegaSquirt and MicroSquirt systems. These are "DIY" FI systems, so you can go right through all the math and get a working system. Then you'll need recommendations about tuning and engine mods from someone else since I can't think of anything right now. I will be checking back in on this thread to see what people suggest. |

http://www.ecmspy.com/download/BuellTuningGuide_EN _V2.0.pdf Bosch also do some good publications Gasoline Engine Management http://www.amazon.com/Gasoline-Engine-Management-B osch-Robert/dp/0837613906/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=bo oks&qid=1266171771&sr=8-10 Bosch Automotive Handbook http://www.amazon.com/Automotive-Handbook-Bosch-Ro bert/dp/0837606144/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid= 1266171834&sr=1-1 Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management (this is a bit long in the tooth and things have moved on significantly): http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-Fuel-Injection-Engine- Management/dp/0837603005/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b For tuning, it depends what you want to read about. If it is to pimp up Buell (pre-Helicon) engines, Sportster/Buell Engine Hop Up Guide gives some interesting reading: http://www.amazon.com/Harley-Davidson-Sportster-Bu ell-Engine-Hop-Up/dp/192913309X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 &s=books&qid=1266172007&sr=1-1 But of course, don't forget to have a look at the NRHS site: http://www.nrhsperformance.com/tech.shtml And, although quite old, these books give you the basics... http://www.amazon.com/Scientific-Exhaust-Systems-E ngineering-Performance/dp/0837603099/ref=sr_1_1?ie =UTF8&s=books&qid=1266172155&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Design-Tuning-Competition-En gines/dp/0837601401/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid =1266172200&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Four-Stroke-Performance-Tuni ng-Bell/dp/1859604358/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&q id=1266172228&sr=1-2 http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Tuning-4-Stroke-S econd/dp/0750618051/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid =1266172228&sr=1-5 And those are just ones I have copies of, there are plenty more on Amazon which may be better or worse... Oh, and if you want to know why your engine works, read these two texts: http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Internal-Combus tion-Engines-Richard/dp/0768004950/ref=sr_1_1?ie=U TF8&s=books&qid=1266172413&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Internal-Combustion-Fundamen tals-Benjamin-Heywood/dp/0071004998/ref=pd_bxgy_b_ img_b (Message edited by pash on February 14, 2010) |

Oh, I forgot dynos... The common ones these days are the Dynojet inertia types, but back in my day of reciprocating engine tuning, we used Schenck, Heenan Froude etc. A good book to look at for this kind of thing is Engine Testing in Theory and Practice http://www.amazon.com/Engine-Testing-Michael-James -Plint/dp/0768018501/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qi d=1266174758&sr=8-1 This is a newer edition than the one I have, so maybe it includes info on inertia type dynos... Limited info on (including intertia type) dynos can be found here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamometer Wikipedia is great, but you can't beat a good book to read at the coffee shop |

>>>One can never read enough and build their database on Knowledge. Sounds like my old PERSONAL saying . . .
quote:"you are never better off to know less"
After, however, having had it explained to me on Badweb that "book learning" was worthless . . . well, I keep it to myself.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I had a similar question. However, Barker may already have more knowledge than I and wants to learn more on actual tuning... I'm looking for "Buell ECM 101". Basically, if there was an owner's manual for my ECM - that's what I'm looking for. I'm not sure some of this tuning info would help right now because I don't know my AFV from my ASS. I have an 09 XB12Ss. Thanks! |
