Hello everyone,

I have been eying the 1125r/cr since their introduction (but was a Buell fan much before that point) and I have thinking about picking on up in the future. Right now I am just theorizing on how to fix a few "concerns" that have bothered me about the 1125r.

One of those concerns is the gauge cluster on these bikes; or to be more specific, the digital reading speedometer that I have never been a fan of on any vehicle. I have rode other motorcycles with digital speedometers and did not like them one bit, so I would rather not have one.

Plus, I happen to like the look of the Lightning, which I have seen one or two people from here adapt to their 1125s, while still keeping the 1125's original cluster.

This leads me to ask some questions:
-Where is the vehicle speed sensor located on this motorcycle?
-Does the output from the speed sensor go directly to the speedometer, or does it first go to the ECM?
-Does the gauge cluster hold the odometer information (meaning, how many miles the bike has had in it's life), or does the ECM hold the information?
-Where does the tachometer get its pickup from (coil)?
-Does anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for any model of the 1125(CR/R)?

Thanks.

ECM.

Both.

Off hand I do not know.

The electrical diagnostics manual.

Funny thing is, I am going to be installing a Veypor VR2 computer on my bike soon. While it does have the option of showing gauges with an analog type of display, I will be using the digital ones.

Out of curiosity, why do you dislike digital speedometers?

I rode my friend Norm's 2007 Aprilia RSV-R with a digital speedo and it really sucked because the polling speed was so slow that it didn't refresh fast enough to be very useful...
However, the 1125R is NOT like that at all. It has a VERY fast refresh and is, IMNSHO, better than an analog speedo.

Many small (or could be seen as stupid) reasons, but it all boils down to personal preference. As you mentioned with the Ape's speedometer not being able to spit out numbers fast enough to be useful, because the polling was too slow. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind having both an analog and a digital speedometer (mostly to keep track of the bike's vitals). I know that will get me flamed, but I like what I like.

Full disclosure, I have not test rode any Buell (and probably won't get the chance now, until I buy one), so this is where I sit.

I hope that makes sense.

I can assure you the digital readout on the 1125 is fantastic, but I do understand your preference. I am trying to find some video of someone riding with a cam pointed at it so you can see for yourself, but am coming up empty. I might have to do it : )

There are times in this short clip that you may be able to see the speedo, especially in 720 or 1080 and blown up full screen:

That video was a ton of help, but brings forth another question, is glare a problem on the CR?

Dude, you just need to ride one before you try to engineer solutions to problems that don't exist.

One of the great "tricks" of learning to ride is taping over the dash so you quit looking at it!

Here's a 720p High Def (but rotated 90 degrees CCW) video I shot last night of the speedometer so you can see how good it is.

Okay, well I can now see that the digital speedometer is not going to be an issue. If (or when) I do pick up an 1125, I still might toy with switching it to a custom cluster (I don't care about resale, because I don't plan on selling it).
