I have been pondering going back to a KLR from the Uly, but something about my Uly will just not let her go a second time. Has anyone put a smaller width, larger diameter tire wheel and tire combo on the uly? I am thinking it could be done with spacers and after market brake disc and rotor or maybe a dirt bike front triple, fork tire wheel combo. So have they? |

Keep the uly, get an older used KLR in good shape. I have both, and plan on keeping it that way. The KLR is my "survivor" bike. Does it all well, but not great. If it all goes to shit the KLR is more versatile. The UlyXT feeds my passion for the road. If you go to KLR650.net, you'll see a lot of guys going from the 21" front wheel, to a super moto one. People always wanting something different What about a KLE or KLX if your wanting a little dirt time? |

Yeah, that was kind of the thought. The deal is like this though... Current Stable 09 1125 CR 09 Uly XT 09 ST1300 I have way to much overlap and I want to get a little more specialized. I have the opportunity to trade the 1125 CR for either a 2008 1125 R or a 2009 KLR + $1k I have decided the St1300 is here to stay, I just can't beat it for my long multi week road trips. The desire is to keep A Buell, but trying to keep the right one without to much overlap and the CR is paid for while I am still making payments on the Uly. So, I am looking at all my options. |

Would look at the R/CR trade. 09 1125 CR for 09 KLR +$1K. Not too bad, depending on the KLR farkles. Has the Doo been done? $2K would really make me think. If all the farkles are there, maybe your best bet. Less muss and fuss. The 08+KLRs are nicer looking, and have many upgrades, but have issues as well. The fairing isn't the best at high speed, and is way more $ to fix when you go down. The older ones just look more like dirt bikes, and are cheaper/easier to fix. The forks, and cooling, and brakes are better though, and the best of the upgrades. Cooling being a biggie in the summer; I made my own scoop mod and fan switch on mine. Understanding what you are going through though, you have some tough choices. How much dirt you want to ride, and how far/long a trip(s) you want to do? You can pick up an old KLR that will make short weekend trips for $1,500 $2,000. Yup, making the Uly mostly dirt would be my focus if I had the $. Hopefully someone has made the 21" mod and can help you. - If you ever want to trade the ST1300 for a weekend let me know! Been wanting to ride one. Good Luck! Court - Something I need for mine, and you might think about is the Therm-bob. Good to have in the winter. http://www.members.cox.net/watt-man/TB%20order1.ht m |

You can fit a TKC80 on the rear and a MT-60r on the front without mods for either. Add a chain drive if you want. You cannot add a larger diameter tire to the front because it will hit the motor when it rebounds (info per Erik Buell Racing). I ride a lot off the tarvy on my XT with Avon Distanzias front and rear. The rear is a 160, which is as large as they make. These are tough tires and I've pounded them pretty hard. Useful life of the rear is about 6k for me. Fronts should go over 10k. Being SM tires, they stick pretty well on the pavement. These miles are 90% fully loaded with gear, a lot of 2 lane paved twisties, some slab, and a lot of dirt/gravel. (Message edited by itileman on October 31, 2010) |
