For any of you watching your stators, you know to keep an eye on the battery levels. However, when riding, mine seem to go lower and lower, only to jump right up when the clutch is in. Sometimes it shoots up for no reason, even though I dont change my rpms or gear (i ususally run between 4.5 and 6.5k rpms. However, I keep asking myself... when. When will it give out. I have an appointment up in oakland for my 6500ish mile service, currently just under 6k. but thats not till nov 6th, and the buell is my daily rider. If the stator goes out, its my primary mode of transit, do i get a rental? |

look don't worry about the stator just ride...the first time your batt. light comes on and your bike won't start, push start the bike ride home and setup an appointment. It took about 300 miles for it to go completely bad. I was heading to indy anyway... When you see the voltage drop and not get to 12V at or past 6-7rpms, but hanging steady that's the beginning. |

If you aren't getting below 13v, your stator is just fine. My brand new stator drops down to the low 12s at idle. As to the fluctuation, it may just be engine tempt that is affecting it. There is also a delay in the reading so it isn't showing you exactly what the output is at that moment. |

You do get a loaner IF you've purchased the extended warranty plan. You also do if you've purchased prepaid maintenance, but only for covered (i.e. maintenance-related) service visits. In the case of your stator, you would need the extended warranty. On that topic, my bike has been in for NUMEROUS issues --- clutch weep 3(!) times, cluster replacement, a brake problem, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of other stuff. Add in the maintenance visits, flat tires (I also bought the tire and wheel warranty), etc. and the up front costs are already covered several times over just from bike loaners and free tires. So, under the regular warrentee, which i have over a year left on, does not cover loaners? |

Unless you have other arrangements with your dealer, you are correct. I also feel your stator is fine. |

I wouldn't worry about 13.3 volts. Under 13 I'd be keeping a close eye on it, under 12 and you've got problems. Mine swings a lot, too. Generally stays between 13.6 and 14.2, but has been as low as 13.1 I think in the past. |

Every statement above this one is based on the Stock ECM. There is another thread where it is clearly acknowledged by many folks that the Erik Buell Racing ECM discharges the battery in street riding. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/597712.html?1287713245 I have gone back and forth with ECM's several times (6 or 7?) only to find the stock ECM is much more robust when it comes to keeping the battery alive. |

Mine isn't. Also, the OP never mentioned that he is running a Race ECM. (Message edited by froggy on October 22, 2010) |

Boyd, According to our best inside sources at H-D, although many stators have failed due to damage incurred by running hot prior to the update, they have found no actual failures on new stators that have spent their life with the new wiring harness update. They have gotten many back from dealers that were replaced for customers yet have no actual problem. Perhaps there are some that have failed and were not sent back to H-D, but none that have been returned are bad. The belief at H-D is that dealers and customers do not understand the way the update works. So I was told they are going to release a detailed bulletin to dealers explaining how the update works and what not to worry about. Basically there are many times when the battery warning light comes on just warning of a pending situation not a problem, and there is a low RPM area when the alternator will not produce full voltage. It appears there is a great deal of misdiagnosis of these two things as being a sign of failure. We have never failed one here. If we were able to actually have a sample of a failed unit (one that failed after spending it's whole life with the harness upgrade, not just a stator that failed after the upgrade but had spent time running without the upgrade), we would do some diagnosis on it. However, like H-D, we can't find one. We will be working over the winter to see if we can help clarify this. Thank you, Tech Support Erik Buell Racing From: Bills-Pc [mailto:dontmatr2@verizon.net] Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2010 7:07 PM To: tech@ebracing.com Subject: stator A lot of us are replacing our stators as the results of it failing . Some have already replace theirs 2-3 times. Do you know of a remedy for this. Boyd Miller |

I've wired an LED to the relay that controls the third leg of the stator so I can actually see when all three legs are being used. I've only had the bike out a few times since I've installed the LED but this is what I've seen so far. I am using an Erik Buell Racing ECM. Bike starts and all three legs are being used. Voltage is around 14.2. After about 7 or 8 miles of 40 mph riding the LED goes out and voltage is at 13. Came to a stop, put it in neutral and voltage dropped to 12.4. LED came on, all three legs are now being used and voltage was back up to 14. Got on the highway at speeds anywhere from 60-80 and all three legs were used for the rest of the highway (about 8 miles) and 5 miles of 40 mph roads. I also took a ride where the stator ran on only two legs for about a 50 mile highway ride at arrest me speeds. It's been cool around here so CT never went above 175 for any of what I've described. |

OK - Now I get to play...2100 miles on my CR (09-08 build)harness update at 500 miles (stock ECM)and I've never seen the BATT light on till today. First it was just a few seconds after I started it...then after a 30 mile run down a freeway and a two hour stop it stayed on for more...over to Volt output and I'm watching it drop from 12.8 to 12.1 (first time I've ever seen less than high 13's) As the day goes on I see more BATT lights then a ENG light. It's going from 11.3 to about 12.9..I can get the BATT and ENG light to go off with hard running...I get home after 150+ miles reading about 11.0...all day volts read all over the place (11.0-12.9) I hook up the tender and check the battery a few hours later...reads "barely" 12 I start the bike and my volt output is 14.2! (near idle) A load check of the battery will be my next move...has anybody simply had to replace a battery yet? My bike sits way to much, so I'm hoping it's just the battery... |

Renzo, if you have a volt meter, test the AC output of the stator. |

Running high beam will drop the voltage quite a bit at idle when hot. Otherwise I've never seen below 13.6. |

This morning (after a night on the tender) my battery reads 12.7...I start the bike and it's charging at 14 (muti-tester)...go for a 30 mile ride and it seems OK at first I'm reading (dash) 14 or pretty close...then as I hit a little traffic it's down to 12.5...roll home with both the dash and my multi-tester reading about 11.7...both static and running !?? Tender is back on...I'm feeling like my battery may be "weak" - as I was reading 14 for a good portion of my ride today, seems to be sending a charge, just not received...comments appreciated |

At first glance of the thread title I thought it was somebodies terrible quarter mile times! LOL... just had to interject this small useless comment. |

I thought the dash shows volts going to the battery from the VR. Even if the battery isn't holding a charge, wouldn't it still show 14 volts when running? |

Had a load test done on the battery, it checks out So I'm guessing I've got the beginings of some type of charging problem...Seems that my volts going to the battery range from 14.2 cold to less than 12 warmed up...the last couple rides have been in cool temps (50) I was getting ready to put it away for the season...it's Husqvarna enduro time in Minnesota. I've got a decent dealer, but it's not quite a full failure yet...may have to let it sit till spring. |

Similar complaint, I tried the ground wire idea. It seems to work better. Time will tell. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/601021.html?1288117922 |
