I am prepping to do the 620 mile service on my CR this weekend and mulling over if I should go with synthetic (Amsoil) this go round, or wait until the next service.

I know there are those that think syn oil is a waste of money, but I am convinced it is worth it (to me) and the extra piece of mind is nice.

I am just not sure if 600 miles is too soon. I know the official break-in is done, but I am wondering if maybe the engine needs a few thousand miles to really run in.

I am open to comments, suggestions and as always heckling.

They recommend an oil change at 600. I did that and get with Mobil 1. As of right now, I'm at 3300 miles and I plan on changing the oil by the end of the month with Amsoil.

I let the dealer do the 620 and waited until 1000 miles for Red Line Syn.

they are supposed to be filled from factory/dealer whatever with syn so there is no reason to wait

You will get varying theories here as long as your arm. I was at my 3rd oil change of dino oil by 600. First was at 50

Many high-performance cars come with syn from the factory. Switch whenever you want.

I switched to Mobil 1 20-50 'cycle' oil at the first change (620) from whatever came from the factory (syn3?). I have not had any issues and will keep using it. The manual suggests using syn3, but that is a syn-dino blend. I'll be using 100% syn like most other rotax/KTM motors suggest.

Syn3 is suggested because that's all HD sells.

I may start using amsoil now that I found a local source that is cheaper than Mobil 1.

Like Skntpig, I was at my 3rd change by 620. First at 50, then ~300. I went to the mobil 1 v-twin 20-50 at 620.

It's not going to hurt anything.

I did the same as Dannybuell. Synth3 at 620 and then sythetic (Amsoil) at 1000.

I changed mine at 400 miles to Mobil I, and there after in the 3500 mile range.
Just shy of 15,000 right now.

New filter "every" oil change.

I like to wait until about 2000 miles so the clutch plates get nice and broken in.

It's the clutch that's the problem, not the engine as far as using synthetic oil.

Mine got dino oil at 50 miles and 650 miles, and at 1300 miles it got Mobil1. Motoman recommends synthetic at 1500 miles but the 10w40 from the first oil change I did sheared down to a 5w30 within 600 miles so I wasn't willing to go more than 600 miles on the second fill of 10w40. (I had both dumps tested by Blackstone labs.)

Thefleshrocket What do labs like Blackstone charge for a motor oil evaluation?

Dannybuell, I do a Blackstone on some of my vehicles and its about $30. I went with HD360 at about 100 miles then Redline at the 620. After about 1,000 on Redline I changed to Amsoil for winter storage and next season. The Redline seemed a little notchy after 500 miles so I'll see if Amsoil is any better.

I changed my 2004 Road King oil at 453 miles to synthetic and never had one problem and don't use any oil (between 0 and 2oz.) between changes and it dyno'd at 104HP/109TQ so obviously no detrimental affect on power or ring seal (no, its not stock LOL).

I changed out the ugly break-in oil at about 200 miles and put Harley's dino oil in until 1000 miles, changed it again for more dino oil for another 500 miles, then put Amsoil in. According to Steve Burns, Chase McFarland's race mechanic, the rings seal in the first hundred miles, but the other parts, most notibly the transmission, take much longer. So, I let it go to 1500 miles to be sure everything felt well broken-in before changing to a synthetic. -Tutt

Danny, if memory serves, the basic analysis is a bit over $20 and the tbn test (to see how much "life" was left in the oil is an additional $10). That reminds me, I need more sample containers--my wifes car has an oil change coming up shortly.

I am for sure going with Syn (Amsoil).

I like Motul, but can't get it here (at a reasonable price) or I would go with it for sure.

Thanks for all the input/advice/opinions.
