I hunted locally last Sunday and only saw 3 deer! Back north this Sunday to see if I can put one on the trailer. Going to go out in the morning with the ML to hopefully, fill that tag. |

Had the little 6 pointer in front of me today. Found a scrape on the way to the stand... things are looking up. Full moon and clear skies has them up and eating all night but the full blown rut is less than 3 weeks away and I've got 2 vacation days ready |

Talked to a DNR guy this past weekend. He stated you can't bring more weapons than people-meaning one guy will have to get good at shooting his bow if he wants to take ducks. How we were planning on doing it anyhow was the shooter sits up front and steer guy can bring up the bow if need be. Trading off as needed/wanted. I think it would be a kick ass way to take a buck and when I'm fishing from a yak I always sneak up on 'em-wonder if they give the same confused ear twitching look when they have a broad head pointed thier direction. We'll see how it goes but I'm pretty excited just to go shooting and I'm hoping to get a woody on my wall and a pheasant on my table soon. I don't see a lot of deer fishing so I'm not really thinking we'll run into a lot of 'em but if we do I'll let ya' all know about it. |

Had a spike buck eating its way past me last night. He was on the windward side of me and he didn't smell me. At least I know the Dead Down Wind is working. If those horns would have been shorter than 3"... he would be in the fridge |

Hunted yesterday morning and saw 0 deer(bummer) Tomorrow's hunt up north had to be postponed. I had to take Buck (my dog) in for emergency surgery yesterday! His stomach got "turned" inside him and he bloated up like a beach ball! He could hardly breath because of the internal pressure. I rushed him to my vet and within 20 minutes he was on the operating table. They are going to keep him until Monday for observation but I have been to see him 3 times since he came out of surgery and he is doing well for a dog his age (15) All signs are good, the doc told me before the surgery that Buck only had a 1 out of 3 chance to survive the operation! I had to have them try and save him! After surgery he told me that bringing him in as soon as I knew he was in trouble saved his life. Another 20 minutes and Buck wouldn't have made it. He is not out of the woods yet but the first 24-48 hours are the most critical. He looked good this morning ( I was waiting at the door when they opened) I got him to drink some water out of a syringe (I tried to tell Buck it was like a really small water hose which he loves to drink from) and stayed as long as I could petting him. Please keep Buck in your thoughts. I came within 20 minutes of loosing my best friend. |

Daves, Buck is in our thoughts. We spent Wed night at the animal emergency room with Mavy (our 15 year old cat). She was having a rough time as soon as I got home from Buelltoberfest. Lynn and I have two cats and they are like our children so we take it pretty hard when something happens as I am sure you do as well. Thankfully you got Buck tot he hospital in time, go visit him as much as you can. Lynn and I will think about his speedy recovery. Frank |

This is the biggest buck we've seen at our place this fall. I've got a couple of 8's and a bunch of 6's on the camera, but Senor Diez appears to be King of the Hill this year. rt ps to Dave--hope your dog is OK! tom (Message edited by road_thing on October 23, 2010) |

Glad he is doing well!! He looks good. My husky is loosing hair, muscle mass.... looks like crap but he still has fire in the eye on a side note.... do you know how much noise a box turtle makes when its plowing thru the leaves.... It took awhile to spot him... ya know.. he was moving at such a high speed. |

Dave-might help get your mind off of things a little, would you be able to steer me in a good direction for a compound? This whole idea of getting a deer from a canoe is eating at me and I just don't think I'd be able to make a good shot with my recurve(it's a fishing bow) Any info is appreciated(from anyone actually). I guess I'm getting a little buck fever. Hope you're dog is getting better by the hour. turtles are cool!(albeit a little slow-on land) |

no muzzle loader yet.... but I do have blood on the tailgate! WOO HOOOO. Go a doe about 6:30 this evening. 30 yard pin. Got both lungs but the shot was a little high for my liking. She only went about 20 yards and crashed. |

CeeJay There are many good compounds to choose from. Go to a local PRO SHOP and try a few out. Pick the one YOU like best. Wolfie! Way to go! Good to hear you made a "Double Lung" shot Just got back from seeing Buck. He is doing GREAT! He gets to come home this afternoon. He is able to get up and walk on his own. They let me take him outside to pee and then feed him. Spent about an hour with him. He was pretty much back to normal personality wise(well, as normal as he gets, he is my dog after all) Can't wait to get him back to the shop so he can have 24 hour care. Buck and I will be living downstairs in the shop til he gets better and is able to be carried upstairs to the apartment. At 15 years old he doesn't have the horsepower in his back legs to do stairs so I carry him up and down them every day. I don't think carrying him will be good with the 10" cut in his belly! |

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that picks up the old dog. Bruiser has a hard time getting up every now and then. I help him when he is having a hard go of it. I think it kinda makes him mad because he always talks to me when I do it. |

Not true! Any deer taken with a bow is a trophy! Buck is home now assuming his regular duties at the shop. We are camping out downstairs in the shop for a few days. He is doing GREAT! |

After checking a few things out, I decided my old rebel recurve will still do the trick. I was worried that mine may not have enough speed but the state of Ohio states a person only needs a 40lb draw wt to hunt deer, so assuming that they set that number for a reason I should be good. While I have the utmost respect for anyone that hunts with a bow and every compound I checked out was nice, fairly light-even with all that crap hanging off of them, and seems like they'll punch a hole through both sides, I guess I just really like shooting my recurve. Now I just gotta build up those calluses or get a release-shudder Glad to hear Buck is doing well and wolfie I agree with Dave post her up! |

Wolfie! Way to go. You are 2 ahead of me now. Took Buck in this morning to be re wrapped. He is well on his way to a full recovery. I talked them into just letting me wrap him with fresh gauze every morning from now on. I usually have to re do it anyway. That way I can go hunting tomorrow and I don't have to pick Buck up to get him in and out of my truck. I think having me do it will be better for everyone. The hunt in back on, starting tomorrow morning. |

You kicked my ass last year Dave!! The learning curve is pretty quick when it comes to getting it in the fridge #2 went a LOT easier...FO SHO! Now I'm going to start using a rattle bag and grunt call to see if I can get something with some horns on it to pay me a visit. Glad to hear the Buckster is doing good. Give him a pat on the head for me. Mark |

Things are starting to heat up! Srapes and rubs all over the place. I did a mock rub and scrape last night when I put some corn out. I also picked up a bleat can to see how that works out... fingers crossed |

It is here! Tomorrow is Muzzle loader season's first day! The fifty is ready, got my shot, pellets, caps, gear and such. The boat is ready and it will be on before sun up tomorrow. Mikey and I are going to sweep some islands that can only be had by boat. It will be our first freeze of the year, cold and clearing tomorrow. That should be good. We shall see what we see. |

Faster than you would think. It is getting increasingly difficult to get permission to hunt on farmlands anymore because everywhere you look around them is a new home built on the neighboring former farm land. Therefore, Mikey and I have been relegated mostly to hunting the big island on a nearby lake, 1400 acre island. Problem with that is the island is boat access only, we had no problem getting out there, but no one else showed up, we saw one other hunter all day, we heard three shots all day, and saw no deer, except for a couple with a flashlight before sun up as we were going in. Lots of tracks, no rut marks and no deer. We figured no one was moving them, even though we took turns trying to make that happen. I hopped in the boat and hunted the closing hours by myself today, tracks all over, no deer. One fox walked by, and a screech owl flew over within ten feet of my head. Beautiful day, calm lake, nice boat ride. Loading was tough there in the dark, on a remote un-lighted ramp. Tomorrow I will be calling some of the local farmers with BIG properties to see if I can get permission to hunt, but most of these folks have family who have hunted there for centuries and don't want nubes in there. It is almost looking like it would be easier to drive around in the early am or at dusk until I hit one with the truck. I have twelve acres here that has not seen one deer in the eleven years we have been here. Not so much as a foot print. There have been people who have hit them with their cars on the road in front of our driveway though. We have had a bear, foxes, coyotes, loose cows, loose horses, opossum ,skunk, woodchucks, squirrel, even geese, but no deer. Still I am on the hunt! |

I'm lucky enough that I get to hunt on my neighbors land The bad thing... so do all of his other friends.... and tonight, the neighbor down the street decided to take her dog for a walk right behind my tree stand... we had words... she left mad... hey, the rut is ON! speaking of rut... about 30 minutes after she turned around and walked away in a huff.... GIGANTOR came trucking thru the wood like a freight train... I gave him a grunt and a couple of bleat cans... but he was gone I'll be in the tree every day this week! |

Last Friday I leased 115 acres of river bottom land timber to hunt. Started hunting it on Monday morning with my friend Brent. We could've both shot bucks that a lot of people would shoot in the first 1/2 hour! Tuesday we saw 8 different bucks but none we wanted to shoot. Brent shot a nice doe and while she laid on the ground 30 yards away 4 different bucks checked her out. Weds we didn't hunt. Went back out today and I only saw a 7 point and 4 doe that ran past me. Not sure what spooked them, it wasn't me. They went up by Brent and he shot one. I told him I was really glad I leased the ground so he could fill HIS tags! Hahahahaahahah We will be back out in the morning. |
