Does it look like the one in this picture: /image{http://us.ebid.net/for-sale/mikuni-vm30sc-carburet or-14059337.htm#pic}? If so, the 'spigot', style of connection to engine case doesn't look correct (been a long time ago). |

Yup! Thats it. The carb I got (advertised as a VM30) isn't. Looks like I can get a new VM30 for $100 easy... I'd rather have a used one for $30, but that's a cheap new carb, so I can't complain too much... |

Reep: Have you checked out Sudco? If it's Mikuni, they probably have it. rt |

Mike, I'd like to do the thing this spring. Is a 250 big enough for that type riding? |

The 250 makes 35 HP, and it is only 300 lbs. That's plenty. My KLR-250 made about 17HP, and it would do 75mph. The real question will be fuel economy and durability. These things are getting pretty tough to buy parts for. There is a place near me in Ohio that supposedly had a bunch of spares they bought as NOS, but they make you pay through the nose for them. So if you get one, find one pretty complete, especially the motor and jug. Very cool picture Road Thing! Thanks! |

I'm still loving that picture. I think that will be the paint job, but with a more obnoxiously bright green color. Cylinder is rebored. I have what are apparently the last 4 oversize wiseco pistons that are on the planet over on my workbench (two even have rings ). I just got the brake lever to switch from a left foot brake to a right foot brake again. The carb should show up any day, and I'll have to pull it apart to go hunting jets. I am looking for a 45 tooth rear sprocket, though tempted to keep the current sprocket, which would make the bike a wheelie monster. My neighbor (and good friend and fellow motorcycle bad idea enabler) had a 1972 Kawasaki 250 (mine is a 71) and in his stupid youth (what better time to do it?) rode the thing into the ground in a year beating the hell out of the thing... but kept his keys and a lot of fond memories. He gave me the ignition key... mine lacked one... and I put it in and... you guessed it... Click. On went the ignition. Spin the crank, and "click click click" goes a bright blue spark from the points ignition system... this bike wants to run again. More pictures to come. And when the carb comes in, it might even make noises. (Message edited by reepicheep on October 27, 2010) |

Unlike electronics, where when you let the magic smoke out they get very unhappy, motorcycles get unhappy when you keep the magic smoke in... The bison runs now, and the magic smoke that has been accumulating sometime since the 70's can finally escape. The bike seems much happier now! http://www.facebook.com/v/1471651198791 Lots left to do, but everything so far is going a lot better than expected. |
