They aren't easy to build on your own. I'm only aware of one Badwebber who's done their own shock. There are several companies that will rebuild them including sending it in to Race Tech or Aftershocks (they did mine and pretty good work). Here's a link for a discussion held on the matter a few years ago: http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/47623/3 52908.html?1209701503 Many people here will try and convince you to get an aftermarket shock from Works, Penske, or AST (if they are still making them?). How you deal with it depends on your application and how much extra money you have in your wallet. Welcome to the board. | ||

I'm one of the people who advocate an aftermarket shock. I have been through several stock ones. I'm getting tired of replacing them. I don't have a Penske yet, but it is only a matter of time before my stock one blows a gasket again, and then I'm springing for the Penske. | ||

Well Whitetrash,it appears you know WAYYYYY more about my bike than I do.This is my second bike,first Buell. The seat is a Corbin and it's ok I guess,as I can't testify to the original.Not trying to sound stupid,but what is an S1W? | ||

s1 wight lighting, came with different heads, ignition was different i think and some other subtle difference only came in white and orange with blue frame if I remember correctly. (made a bit more power) i have a orange and purple/blue s1w that i just fired up and rode today after a top end rebuild.. yours looks great. | ||

The White Lightning was only offered in '98. They came with the larger Manta tank from the S3's and had the single or twintail option. Also had the Thunderstorm heads, and lightning cams (I believe). Neat bikes, the first regular production 101 HP bikes from Buell weren't they? I thought originally the White Lightning came out in the pearl bodywork with white frame and wheels. Then they had a bunch of various paint options too, so you could get a S1W in pretty much any color. But I could be wrong, perhaps all the colors were available from the start... Your VIN will tell what model it was for sure. F_skinner posted this up recently,on another thread "The VIN starts with 4MZSS for an S1 and 4MZYS for S1W". Bill, Aftershocks used to have their own place in Palo Alto, CA. I had my shock done by them when they were still independent, their website was aftershocks-suspension dot com. Then they merged with a bike shop(not long after I had my shock built actually), Tri Valley I guess. Now it appears they are no longer there at all. Were they bought out and then closed down like the whole HD/Buell scenario? Sorry to both provide bad info, and to learn that one of the few shops that would do old Buell suspension is no more. | ||

If that's the case, you also have the Thunderstorm heads and pistons. Also the X1 style cams. 101 HP at the rear wheel. I see you have the old original recall shock. There MAY be a slight possibility you can get it replaced as it was recalled. Check with your local former Buell dealer and have them look it up. Maybe someone here can do a look up. Brad | ||

That would be 101hp at the crank not rear wheel. Only available in white at first. | ||

Ok,I get it now. I got confused for a min., I see all aftermarket shocks are exposed,just assumed the top shock in that pic. was the replacement.Thanks for clarifying. | ||

The S1W is one of my most favorite Buells and you got a great deal. If it were my bike though, I would get a set of "original" tank decals. | ||

It's gonna get repainted this winter(not the frame) and new decals. It has a vinyl sticker on the tank that has all kinds of air bubbles in it. Thanks for the compliments | ||

You'll loose power running a straight pipe with no baffling. Supertrapp and Buell Pro Series mufflers are good. Borla, if you can find them, produce a deep rich sound. If you want loud, Force and D & D make loud pipes/mufflers that won't loose power like a straight pipe will. | ||

Nice looking Bike! Your not gonna like riding it in the rain to much with out the Rear Hugger Though! I never cared much for the Squared off S1 Fender but I don't mind the one on my Cyclone! |
