I decided to repack my hmf after 7000 miles of semi hard riding.Upon inspection of the original packing there was very little left. The replacement material used was 10.00 FmF 4 stroke packing that was purchased at a local kawasaki dealer. After the pipe was reassembled and all joints were resealed with high temp silicone I took it for a ride. To my surprise the low and high rpm grunt was back. WOW!!!! Not to mention it hums nicely at 65 again. I almost feel that this will be needed twice a year since I usually put 12k or more a year on a bike. I cant believe the repack made such a difference.Anyone else have similiar experience. |

No experience, but it sounds like you may want to do it 3 times a year if you are putting 12K a year on it, since it was pretty much all gone at 7K. I have 7K on my ZX10R and have been running a Yosh slip-on the entire time. You have me thinking I may want to re-pack it or just get a new slip-on all together. Then again, I have been mulling over a putting a full AK system on it... |

My FMF packing was gone after 3 track days, or less than 400 miles. I used the same thing you did for re-pack, as the FMF Apex kit is ~$60.00. The $10.00 kit lasted all of 2 hours, as it doesn't have the protect-o-blanket material. You'll find bits of it on the rear wheel. |

I think I'd be inclined to try a layer or two of SS screen with the glas-packing to help contain it. I rolled up a piece of 1' x 2' SS screen and stuck it inside my Drummer, softened the sound a little.

Talk to FMF about repacking SPECIFICALLY for the Buell 1125r. I know there's someone there that's aware of what it takes for the Apex, and it's not the normal sportbike mix. It does include some stainless steel wool. |

Life of a packing will depend on how hot your run your afv's.A lean bike will burn it out quickly. I run my R a touch richer on my ebr race ecm. |

Bristol Core packing is supposed to be some of the best on the market for heat/longevity. I use something that looks pretty much identical to it (white, not itchy like fiberglass and about 2' strands) called Super Sport packing. I've logged about 5-6k miles on an RT-4 with no changes to it's tone. I've pulled apart a couple of these after testing to see what they're like after some mileage, most have been pretty much intact with some packing down, but that's all. I've considered using the Bristol Core stuff myself, but what I'm using now is wearing quite well for the price. |

I might have to open the Drummer to see the condition of the packing there. I think the QC screen might help keep some of the fluff in, not sure |

I bought some Bristol Core packing for my FMF when the time comes. |
