Have an '08 that had engine problems so they put a '10 model engine in. Just broke the engine in and changed oil, went by the'08 specs. Little did I know that they have different capacities. Thanks to the BADWEB I got the proper numbers. It would have been nice for the dealer to let me know. | ||

As others will say, dump the old oil and filter, put in a new filter, and pour in three quarts. Doesn't matter what year--the formula seems to work. | ||

Flesh, I hate to disagree but I think that 3 quarts is cutting it rather close. If I remember right, after both my best friend and I did our oil changes on our 09 CR's the amount it took was 3.2 -3.5 quarts to get it to register full on the dipstick (cold)standing straight up and after having time to settle. Yeah, 3 quarts might do it, but then I have to wonder if minimal oil levels is contributing to the stator failures. Just mind the dipstick and check it after being upright on a pitbull stand or some other device. -Tutt | ||

I thought the 2010 bikes had the window to check the oil level... Am I wrong?? | ||

no, the 2010's do have the sight glass on the side to check the oil. | ||

Personally I am glad my bike doesn't have that sight glass on it.  The way the oil level varies up and down on these things during the check procedure it would make me nuts! I'd be looking at it constantly. | ||

When you guys drop the oil, pull the screen on the bottom of the motor as well. It's the 5-bolt plate on the rider's right underside of the motor. This is something Erik Buell Racing told me about, and holy mother, you find some nasty grime in there. It's not covered in the service manual procedure for changing the oil to my knowledge. I've found bits of gear shear, cam tensioner, etc., in there. Then, yea, put the drain plugs and screen back in, safety wire it, and dump 3 quarts and don't sweat it. I change the oil in the track bikes when "the oil noticeably changes color or it doesn't shift as smooth" (Message edited by jdugger on October 11, 2010) | ||

I used the same "o" rings putting the basket back in. About a cup more oil came out when removing it. I can hardly believe that very large metal parts can be in there and not destroy that flimsy plastic contraption. There was nothing but a couple very small fuzz pieces of oil filter in there when removed at 10,000mi. | ||

Metal is right -- I've never replaced the ring and it's always sealed well. Just wipe it down and then put a fingertip's worth of fresh oil on it. | ||

Thanks for the info on the screen. Yes the'10 model has a sight glass, the 2.7qt put it just above the min line. I still have the dip stick and it didn't register on that. Now I'm wondering how many other differences there are in the engines. | ||

so...it's that time of year again. Change oil on all the bikes and small engine units. Get to the Buell, start talking with the GF, and forget the Buell likes to shoot oil out of the left drain plug, past the bike lift, and right on my shoe and floor. That's why I keep a pile of shop rags and a bottle of bourbon in the shop. Grrrr. | ||
