Anyone know where i can get or buy a service manual in .PDF format. I can't get my head around buying a paper copy when I could load this on my iPad and take t with me / do searches. | ||

they ARE available in electronic format, PDF, to be exact. The Europeans don't seem to have a problem with what some folks consider unethical. | ||

I admit, if HD did sell CD's that had a .pdf format, i would buy one in a heart beat. Adobe has this nice 'find' feature that is faster than mine (brain) so it would be nice. | ||

I own a SM but I would gladly pay again for a PDF version. When I am in the shop, I don't really like digging through a book - it is much easier to print out the pages I need after having found them by using the "search" function. However, as Court points out, there ain't such a thing that can be had without breaking the law. Oh, and theft is never ethical regardless of what Europeans might think. | ||

I would like an electronic version also, probly a dumb Q, but has anyone pitched the idea to Erik or HD? Nothing worse than getting the only manual I have greasy because I don't have a photographic memory. | ||

I have flown, on several occasions, to Milwaukee and net with the "powers that be". I own thousand of dollars worth of service, parts, electric and graphics manuals. I have every one ever printed since the RR-1000. I plead with HD to provide something like an annual "Buell Gold" membership where we could have access to current, up to date, manuals. One of the problems with mine, as well as the black market . PDF, is that they are not updated with corrections and new information. I'd pay an annual fee to have access to those updated manuals they have. Buell, by the way, did CF manuals in 1996/97 and they were awesome. I have a case here and it was one of the coolest things Buell did. HD shut that down immediately, they didn't understand the Buell owner. Anyway..... That's history now. I suspect you will see far more impressive things from Buell with the HD constraints gone. | ||

For those of us that take multi-day trips, it would be really nice to be able to have a PDF service manual on a flash drive, just in case. | ||

imho, at least the part-manuals should be available free and online, like other manufacturers (yamaha, honda, etc.) provide. and now, that buell isn't anymore, all the manuals should be available online, they (hd) owe us. it's a fu*çing rip-off! wow i didn't mean to kick up suck a con traversal subject. Here is my 2 cents. I live in an electronic world, I don't own a printer nor do I ever print. I guess I can call myself green also :} If manufactures don't want people to have people pass around their IP for free than they need to change there ways and embrace technology. Years ago I use to buy cd's (lot's of them at 20 bucks per pop) Then a cool thing called Napster and mp3's came out. I turned to that... I know it was illigal and all that but it was also easy and if I only wanted 1 song I could get it. The record companies faught this had and in my opinion focused their efforts in the wrong place. They tried to sue people rather than finding a way to innovate and profit off this technology. Fast forward to today where a little company called APPLE thought out of the box and created itunes. No while I have many ways to get free music on the web for free I buy it off itunes becsuse it is easy and convenient and I don't get stuck with a cd case to put in the landfill. No the same thing is happening with movies andd tv (itunes again and netflix for example). I now pay for movies again :} Now if Harley wants me to pay for a big book of paper and not make it available for purchase I must say if I can get it online for free I will turn that way. I can still sleep at night. If I could go to buell.com and give them my card I would be happy to go that way as well. Anyways my rant is done, companies needs to embrace change and profit off it rather than try to fight the masses and the power of the internet. Hell they would make more money off the electronic distribution by not having to kill more trees and courier manuals around. Updates are easy also... | ||

In 1997 I spent 10 days at M.I.T. working on an initiative that would have had Buell (the FIRST manufacturer of ANY wheeled vehicle to have a www presence) light years ahead of any person or company. We had developed some things that were totally out of the box. About a month later I flew to the Cow Palace in San Francisco, where I first met Bill Gates who as the keynote speaker following my presentation, rode an S1 on stage and did a presentation about what Buell was doing. It A couple Harley-Davidson executives flew to Cambridge to view the presentation of the culmination of lots of work (and to see me dance at the Harvard Faculty Club by accident ). The moment they returned to Milwaukee it was summarily killed. It was explained to me "Buell will get NOTHING that Harley-Davidson doesn't have or that makes HD look behind the times". Case closed. There were (they are gone now) a couple folks who were quite irritated that I kept the video of the presentation as well as all my notes throughout the entire effort. This set the stage for a number of subsequent interactions with Harley-Davidson. If you think you are now going to get something from them start out by trying to buy a set of frame pucks. Court | ||

Bassettkyle, Apple dosen't want you to know, but there were online downloadable music stores since 1993. Only difference was Apple has a better marketing department. I do agree with many of the points on this thread, I also would love to see a PDF version of the manuals become available for purchase, but I know thats never going to happen. | ||

Court - interesting.... If you have a case full of them, and I'm thinking you can only use one at a time, then how would one acquire such a gem?? I like hardcopy, because it works when the electricity doesn't, but I work with .pdf and other CF formats daily and know the advantages of electronic files(I especially like the ipod idea - having the manual at the track would be nice from time to time) As far as Europe goes, are we talking former eastern bloc? Copyright? what is copyright? I have copier, no problem. | ||

The Pirate Bay helps me sleep at night. If I ever find a PDF copy of the SM I will let all of you know and anyone who wants a copy for free will have one. Sorry that you paid for everything since the early 90s Court. You're ethically superior to me when it comes to this stuff. (And thanks for your efforts with HD, regardless if they never got off the ground...it's commendable!) | ||

HD owns all the intellectual property. They used to aggressively protect it, it's a crap shoot what they'll do going forward. The .pdf (be mindful they may or may not be current) are easy to find.
