2009 1125R 8000+miles... all stock The charging system took a crap on me today, so I get the bike to S.Side Harley&Buell today, and was telling them my problems besides the the charging system won't charge at all the battery light check engine light and the system voltage. Ok my other problems 1; bike dies at random stops before taking off which endangers my life. 2; I can feel the handle bars move with a slight clump noise when going over small bumps. Ok on the #2 clump noise HD&Buell said that I have to pay to have the bike diagnosed for the front end noise and that it's not free and covered under warranty! Could someone please help me understand how this is normal problem that I have to pay for to have fixed? |

Neither of these are normal, and both should be covered by the warranty. Find another dealership. You're not too far from Buell of Bloomington, a BadWeb sponsor. |

You should not have to look for a dealership that will fix these things under warranty.I would call HD customer service. This is bullsh-t. If your warranty is still good it should be fixed under warranty. They are getting away with way too much of this crap. It's an ongoing problem lately and we all need to demand that this type of thing get's fixed.I'm done now. Sorry for the rant. |

double dippers, the factory and customer pay for the same work. I would report them to HD, go somewhere else and don't look back. |

well i'd suggest that you check the head bearing cap make sure it's good and tight i think that it's supposed to be between 38 and 42 lb ft when torqued correctly i just started having the same issue recently and after remembering threads of this nature before i checked and the stem nut was tight but i am guessing the bearings wore/settled in after 6k miles and it just needed to be broken loose and re-torqued that i think would fall under routine maintenance and thus not covered. |

Drhodes1970 advice will work if all dealers are like that in your area. |

The only caveat is, a steering stem is a maintenance item. It requires adjustment. It is part of the maintenance schedule. If the dealer (and the factory) wants to, they can throw that at you - "it wasn't adjusted properly so now it's worn". Not that I agree with it...just being devil's advocate is all. |

Ratbuell The steering head bearings are sealed, angular contact bearings and do not require additional lubrication. Check for smooth range of movement and proper operation. No where in the manual does it specify that this has to be checked out by HD and if it does then it would have to be a FREE service. My steering stem has a smooth range of movement and proper operation and I started to notice the noise that is so faint and just beginning. I take it in for a problem that I diagnosed therefor all the tech at HD on the S.Side has to do is check the bearing to make sure there is no unusual ware due to the unusual beginning to a problem that is not described in the owners manual. If you are affiliated HD Service in any way and you have been screwing customers over with the crap that you are telling me, shame on you! } |

He did say he was just playing Devil's advocate - just use it as an opportunity to have a good counter-argument prepared.. |

are we sure 42ft lbs is correct? buell manuals have been wrong before. I would buy a scale and torque it so the resistance is in spec. I ended up torquing to 50 ft lbs and it was still within the resitance range. It also reduce head shake. |

The steering head bearings are sealed, angular contact bearings and do not require additional lubrication. Check for smooth range of movement and proper operation. OK...but there's still a torque spec, right? I have to dig out my CR manual, but if its anything like my XB or my tubers, retorquing is part of the scheduled maintenance items...and as a vehicle owner it is YOUR responsibility to see to it that all maintenance is done according to the schedule set forth by the factory if you expect them to uphold any warranty claims. You do maintenance. They warranty defects. Lack of maintenance does not equal a defect. If you are affiliated HD Service in any way and you have been screwing customers over with the crap that you are telling me, shame on you! } And you need to re-read my post. Not that I agree with it...just being devil's advocate is all. Shall I draw you pictures for the big words? |
