I am wondering how long that fan will keep working, and if I should buy a replacement while they are still available ?

With the newest software in the newer machines that makes the fan run whenever the bike is above 15mph might make it last a lot less time.

My '04 failed the fan at 13K...I tore it apart to see what happened...it is a standard brush commutated motor...there was plenty of brush left and the armature was fine....it was the bearing on the fan side that came apart...nice little stainless steel ball bearings.

But there was no sign that there had EVER been any sort of lubricant in the bearings.

Local dealership quoted 2 week lead time...found one at another dealer 100 miles away, went and got it...I did get a 25% discount since it was a Buell part thet were clearancing...I have since gotten a backup for later.

Fast,

I've never looked at the fan up close, so this may be a stupid question; but can I assume since you bought a new fan that the bearing wasn't serviceable?

The fan is pretty cheap, so it's not a big deal. But if lead times get really long in the future, I'd like to know if I could possibly get back on the road by running down to the auto parts store or bearing house.
