08 uly. have some of you guys been having that problem? we have a bike here that they have been messing with for awhile and are running out of ideas. replaced vr and stator/rotor. checked grounds. over and over. the real odd part is it doesnt do it until it gets up to temp. reads about 19+ volts for a bit when the bike is up to temp and running 4-5000. so barely not enough to set the codes, but still obviously to high. and the high voltage surge seems to happen about the time the fan kicks on. but those 2 should really be in no way related... sure seems like they are though. my tech thats working on it is a persistent guy, but his fuse is starting to run low. just thought maybe the collective here might have had similar problems. seems that my memory recalls another guy that was coming into my shop a lil to often for headlights that also had a uly. no idea if he figured out what was going on(and cant seem to remember his damn name! |

Stator fixed mine. Could the new stator be a bad one? I would do the stator test and make sure it's a good one. I can't think of anything else except for a bad VR. If stator test good then try a new VR. |

I have seen this on can-am's. customer states while riding the check light would come on. when checked cold all was good,10 min or so the voltage would spike over 16v...new regulator and all was good. |

I just fixed this exact problem on my 08XB12X. Buy some Dielectric Grease and put it in the female connector side, and on both sides of the spade connectors. Some people have just cut out that connector and hard wired it, but I wanted to be able to change out the bulbs if they blow and not have to spend a lot of time doing it. |

no no no, only things that taste good are good for you! things that taste bad are bad for you! well with the second vr, now it doesnt have a problem until 6500 damn near spot on, and then it only goes up to between 16-17 for a second. i love electrical problems.. ugh |

The Harley/Buell VR's are just junk IMO. I had a 91 FLHS and went through three VR's till I got smart and put a Compufire VR on. No more problems. The bad part is Compufire doesn't make one for the Buell. Not a big enough market to warrant it I guess. |

That was going to be my question, is there an aftermarket VR? Already had to change one on the '08, under warranty luckily. Worried about next time. Other than the plug compatibility issues shouldn't someone have a two wire (for the later models) 12vdc regulator of sufficient capacity that you could adapt yourself? |

There has to be an aftermarket one out there for Sportsters, that should be adaptable. |

My lights were burning out every 100 miles or so. After checking all the wiring and spending money and time on new bulbs, I bought a new voltage regulator and the problem was solved. The voltage readings looked fine out of the regulator in the shop, but a normal meter won't read the spikes. |

There has to be an aftermarket one out there for Sportsters, that should be adaptable The bolt holes do not line up and the Buell is three phase on the early ones. I'll bet the Sportster is single phase. You could make an adapter plate if the sportster has the same stator. |
