After shutting down my '09 CR (stock except for Erik Buell Racing ECM with 3,000 miles and zero problems) yesterday when the fan stopped I could hear a faint single chime tone followed by a one second whirl sound in the lower right side motor area (behind stator cover I think/fear). This sequence of sounds began to repeat in cadence. There were no other symptoms. I started the bike back up and gently rode around the block. After shutdown and fan shut off the same chime and whirl were heard. I started the bike again and let her idle for four to five minutes. When I shut down after idle the chime and whirl did not start up, no sounds. I connected the tender as usual and experienced no further noises or problems. Thoughts? Solutions? Thank you.

Fuel pump cycling. Don't know why they do that, but they do that.

If I was a dick, I would say "Read the fraking manual", as it is in there, but I am in a good mood so I will tell you that it is the fuel pump cycling to maintain pressure on the fuel rails. This is to prevent vapor lock and starting issues if you happen to start the bike up in the next few minutes (like at a gas stop). Get a group of 1125's and they sound like they are talking to each other.

Nothing to see here, move along : )

Whew, thanks very much, now I know what the fuel pump sounds like when cycling after shutdown and its purpose. I guess I've developed a case of statorphobia but I wouldn't have known what that sound was anyhow. I feel so much better, a little more stupid than normal, but much better. Bad Web has been very helpful. It would be many times more difficult without you good folks. Thanks again. : ) : )

Nah. The stator makes a pocketa-pocketa-pocketa sound... <grin>
