I just got a new camera the other day so I thought I'd post up some pictures that I've taken these past two days. I got into photography in college and I used a digital point and shoot. I graduated and started messing with my father's Canon T50 with a few pieces of glass and I've had fun, but the pull to a DSLR really got me salivating. So I saved up and I did it: Nikon D90 with two lenses (both Nikon): 35mm f/1.8 AF-S and 55-200mm VR. I got the 35mm because I like taking available light shots at parties so I'm not annoying with the flash ... and the 55-200mm for the action shots and portrait -- whether human or vehicle -- type stuff.

I'm still learning the DSLR controls, especially getting the aperture and shutter speed correct for the type of shot I want to get. Here's some of the better one's I've taken so far:

Jason on his '08 R with OEM plastic. Still having trouble keeping the subject in focus while getting that nice blurry background. I need to play around a little bit, but I think if I increase my shutter speed to 1/200 or so it should get better.
Nikon D90, 35mm f/1.8 AF-S, f/13 @ 1/60, ISO-200 (auto), cropped

Jason again. This time I bumped up the shutter speed a bit, but still can't get the entire subject in focus. Maybe I should use the 55-200mm glass for this instead? I was shooting in burst mode @ 4.5 fps ... this one was the best out of the bunch.
Nikon D90, 35mm f/1.8 AF-S, f/11 @ 1/160, ISO-200 (auto), cropped

I shot this one just a few minutes ago in my driveway. I live across the street from a huge hospital -- yeah, the sirens get annoying -- and was playing with long exposure shots with a flash at the rear of the exposure. I caught an ambulance, lights full bore, about half way through the 10 second exposure and it turned out cool. The CR's in "parking" mode with the steering locked and the red LED parking lamp on.
Nikon D90, 35mm f/1.8 AF-S, f/14 @ 10, ISO-400, flash compulsory strobe return, saturation bumped up just a hair in post

I know we have a few threads for pictures already ... not sure if they're archived yet. If they are, feel free to post up any new pics of yer girl. And, the reason why I made the thread, please comment on how I can make these type of pictures turn out even better.

Good early first shots. Trick is to keep both eyes on the subject and to pan as you take the picture and keep panning even as you know the picture is taken. Faster shutter speed will reduce depth of field, so lead to more out of focus. Try to keep a slow shutter speed. Practice on slower things first, like a push bike. Smooth action is what is about. 35mm lens is a little close for smooth panning. Try around 75mm. Digital lens are longer focus than 35mm flim based SLRs.

Might also want to look into an ND filter for you daytime shots,..that way you can keep shutter slower and the 35mm open wide at 1.8 so you still get DOF. If you do get one,..chinese knockoffs are cheap and good on ebay. Buy a big ones, like say 77mm. Adapters are cheap and that means you can them use the same filter on all your lenses.

Flash is a good thing. For example in your last shot with the CR,..you could have bounced the flash off a card to the left of the bike and gotten some fill light in there.

Good start. Watch out for LBA syndrome :P

PS: i meant flash as in not the camera build in flash but a speedlight, the separate unit that mounts on the hotshoe.

Usanigel:
Yeah, I need a lot more practice at panning smoothly. I shohuld've been on my knee for those panning shots at least, but I was crouched down. Next time I'll slap on the 55-200mm to around 75mm to see if it helps any. These are the things I don't know about, haha.

Mac_inger:
I haven't gotten any filter just yet because I honestly haven't researched them enough to know what each does and when to use them. I'll look into the neutral density filters, but I'm also looking at UV and linear/circular polarizers. Still researching ... and I've already got a healthy case of LBA!! If I could have afforded it, I would've gotten the 18-200mm. But I'm sure I'll long for some more professional lenses at some point! As for the flash, I just used the pop up at the end of the exposure (not that I know what it means, but EXIF says "flash, compulsory, strobe return"). I'd really like to get the Nikon SB-400 for a little more reach and so I can bounce when I'm inside. Using cards is a little advanced for me at the moment : )

Thefleshrocket:
Thanks! I'm really reading a lot so hopefully I'll get better at my compositions soon.

Thank you both for the advice!! It's really appreciated. I'm going to take some more panning shots tomorrow after work.

That's a great shot Ozzy ... I wish the sky wasn't overexposed so I could see your bike better! Are my eyes fooling me, or does your CR have side fairings on it?! Or is that just a belly pan?

No need to apologize -- I asked for others to share their pics, too!

Most definitely! Other than that photoshopped trackday pic of the black CR with the tribal dragon graphics on the side, I haven't seen a CR with side plastic yet. From what I can see it really takes the bulk and width out and makes the bike look thinner.

Would love to see any pictures you have.

Here are some pics. The quality is not up to the standard of this thread but we are learning. The installation was really simple and took about an hour and a half. Unfortunately I did not tighten all the screws properly so some have been lost. I am waiting on replacement from Germany so I can stop using zip ties.

Mac your bike looks awesome. I would love to get rid of the mirrors.

Ozzy,..its a beast : ) you should get rid of the mirrors and i would do the fender eliminator too. It will make it so much more compact and mean looking.
Its a bit of a pain to ride around without mirrors but i just cant decide which pairs or rizomas to get. I think i might talk to pjsparts, buy 2 or 3 pairs, see which ones i like and return the ones i dont.

The one one thing i cant tell from the pictures is how does it look closeup,..i mean the transition from carbon fiber to black. That would not work on the red CR im thinking.

Anyways,..got a plane to catch. See all you guys in a month. Im sure youll all have solved the stator issues by then too, so i am looking forward to coming back to that : )
Ill drink a homemade grappa to you : ) or two or more...

Those fairings bring the schmexy Ozzy!!

I took a few more the other on Sunday during my ride home from southern MD. Overcast all day and then the sun broke through and the clouds moved out for a bit. I didn't use the camera all weekend because I was shit-toast plastered for most of it, so I decided to whip it out and snap a few. I wish I had some wider glass.

Batman angle!! LOL

And damn proud of it!! U.S.A.! THE American sportbike, and don't you ever forget it.

Thanks Mac and Jeepin

Mac you are right - I would really like to get rid of the mirrors and the original rear fender. I think a set of small rizomas would look great. Perhaps I'll save up for christmas. Unfortunately it is illegal to put fender eliminators on where I live. Heaps of people do it but I don't want to draw any unwanted attention : ). Mac have a look at the red on one this site - http://www.ilmbergercarbon.de/html/buell1125.html - looks good to me.

Jeepin - I see you have tank/frame grips. Do you they make much difference to bike control.

Honestly, I don't ride with a high enough skill set for the grip pads to have a great impact on my riding. They do feel great during hard braking for gripping the tank, but I'd be lying if I said that they're awesome for hanging way off ... because I don't. The main reason I got them actually was for heat management to my legs, and it that respect I believe they help a lot. They're the thickest pads, the "snake skin" model, from A-S-B (TechSpec brand) and they cut the heat transfer from the tank to your inner thigh a great deal ... at least I think so.

Thanks Jeepin - I don't hang off either. I have done some advanced rider training courses and they always recommend getting grips. I think I will get some. Glad to hear about the heat management - It's coming into summer here so will be getting pretty hot soon.

Mac, i think they would look awesome on your bike, all ya gotta do is a red buell logo on the belly pan in a matching red to pull it together, and maybe redo your stripes with good carbon vinyl.

Beauty and The Beast

Right after I shot this last night, I removed the stickers from the pods.
Loretta looks better without them now.
Recently polished the headers on both, I like the look.

Not the most scenic venue, but the only way I can get both Buells in one shot.
