I changed fluids today after 2000 miles. Oil looked fine but transmission fluid was tan in color and frothy with a strong burnt wire smell. bike seems to be running fine. What may be going wrong? |

If you have a burned oil smell in your primary/Trans oil you have a stator going away, this is a common symptom of a bad stator. Ed |

Ahem... nothing wrong with Mobil One products in the primary. The problem is with the use of certain GL-5 gear oils... If you already have the bike put together then check the voltage across the stator. If too low then indeed you have a bad stator. |

I USED THE PRIMARY OIL SOLD @ THE HARLEY DEALERSHIP. BIKE IS PUT TOGETHER. HOW DO I TEST VOLTAGE ACROSS STATOR. I'M FAMILIAR WITH TESTING VOLTS @ BATTERY. ALSO HOW MUCH TROUBLE IS CHANGING OUT STATOR? |

It is not much to changing STATOR which really depends on your experience ... Do you have the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and PARTS BOOK for your YEAR/MODEL ??? It is worth the PICTURES and INFORMATION !!! Have a 110,384.7 miles on my OEM STATOR, ROTOR, and VOLTAGE REGULATOR with many new BATTERIES ... Never adjust my primary tighter than 3/4 inch on the chain tight spot, run same oil in transmission as "i" run in the engine and never run the DRIVE BELT tight ... Have some helpful information you may be interested in, just PM me and it is yours ... |

Robert, your caps is STUCK!!! The output of the stator is about 48V at 200 RPM if memory serves. Get the service manual and do the rest of the tests to confirm. If it reeks, it's a bad stator.. |

There is an S-1 manual on line here in knowledge vault,look up the testing procedure,it is the same. |

Pull plug between stator to voltage regulator and measure voltage there. Specs are in the service manual. Good luck. |

I CALLED LOCAL HARLEY DEALERSHIP FOR PRICE FOR REPAIR. ONE STATOR $119.00 - 2&1/2HR. LABOR @ $65.00. PROBABLY A FEW DOLLARS FOR SHOP SUPPLIES AND NEW FLUID. I THINK THIS IS THE WAY FOR ME TO GO. THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE. I WILL STILL TEST VOLTS, BUT THE WAY THE OLD FLUID WAS COOKED- STATOR HAS GOT TO BE BAD! I WAS TOLD THE TAN COLOR WAS PROBABLY VARNISH COATING ON THE STATOR. |

Ask them to replace the primary chain tensioner while they have the cover off. I forgot to ask them when they replaced my starter gasket. Needless to say, that was before I was introduced to this lovely forum... |

Cycle Electric voltage regulators will resolve the stator melting issue. The regulators from HD are junk. I would replace the stator and voltage regulator with Cycle Electic components. This will also resolve speedo sensor failures as well. http://cycleelectricinc.com/ |

Their explanation is a bit odd. They say they "block" excessive current instead of dumping it to ground. Only way to "block" current is by increasing resistance or opening up the circuit. Either that or they went and changed Ohms law and I missed them memo... |

I have a Crane Cams voltage regulator on my M2 (they don't make it anymore) that opens the circuit. I haven't thought about it but in the years that it has been on there no speedo failures. |
