Ok i just got a set of the factory fairings.
I installed the longer bolt and spacer on the right side front bracket.
My question is how much air gap between the pipe and heat shield do i need to keep it from melting?
I have a 1/8 to maybe a 1/4 now is that enough?
Seen a few pics with them melted. I don't want that mod to mine

I've seen people talking about 1/4. I wouldn't go less than that, and (if it was me) might even try to find a way to fatten the gap up a little more if possible.

do yourself a favor. Tear off the factory heat shield material and get the tape from an automotive store. The factory stuff will burn. 1/4" is plenty. That's what mine is set at.

Yea, I spaced mine to about 1/4 & no probs. I had no prob with the heat shield on there, but listening to others warnings I got a roll of heat shield from american sportbike and cut piece for that area too.

I am running 1/8th clearance and not even warm to the touch on the fairing. But it is a little colder here than most places. I put a 1/8 plastic spacer in both the front and back brackets. Good so far. Also got tape and heat shield and will add if seems hot (or as a winter project). For now, good though.

Fairings: Al at American Sport Bike has a pair or at least did not too long ago. Was also a pair at Twin Cities Harley I am pretty sure. Couple on Ebay as well a couple weeks ago. I got one for one of the bikes.

Couple of other threads about other types of bodywork and may look at one of those for the last bike. One of the mods can probably pull them up.

+1 for the automotive tape...the factory heat shield tape was weak and after one ride had peeled up and got grit/sand/dirt etc on there and wouldn't stick to anything but the pipe (yuck). I wound up covering the heat shield with a lot of automotive muffler tape and it's great! No issues since then.

I don't think so...the stuff I got was just "muffler tape" or something cheesy like that. Basically, it's really thick aluminum foil with a sticky backing. Was only $5-10 a roll. Got mine from Auto Zone in the tape aisle.
