Well i was throwing on a new set of tires today, all smooth and easy. Pull the wheels off. With no big problems.

So i go to put the rear wheel back on and. Let just say It wasnt going smoothly. After getting everything lined up i start to tighten down the rear axle. It wasnt going smoothly at all, which at first i didnt think anything of because they really didnt come off smoothly. But i decided to pull the axle out and make sure nothing was cross threaded.

Well here is what i found

I know first thing i checked, was the pinch bolt on the axle it was all the way out. So wtf happened? i could see if the other side was cross threaded it the axle would go in all cocked but the other side is fine. And what should i do?

Isn't the other side the one that's threaded? The pinch bolt side isn't supposed to have any threads on it.

Might be a burr on the axle? It wouldn't take much to score it like that, it's just aluminum.

Feel the leading edge of the axle where it first starts going into the swingarm. Something has to be sticking up to have caused that damage. You can probably get away with filing it down and then lightly sand the edge of it to smooth it down and then clean up the hole a little as well. It really depends on how deep the scoring is. If it's really bad, you might look into getting a new swingarm, but that's an extreme case. The pics are a little blurry, maybe try the macro setting on your camera to get a better closeup of both the hole and the axle where it goes into that part of the swingarm.

Was the bike new when you got it? That "thread" looks way too uniform to be caused by a contaminant on the shaft, looks like someone tried to do it deliberately.

I assume here that you have checked the shaft for burrs or damage.

Bike was new. But this just happened today. (as far as I know)

And pizzaboy i am no photographer, i just click the button and hope for the best.

The axle dosnt seem to have any bur's on it feels smooth. i cant see what went wrong. I have never had this much trouble trying to get a rear wheel on.

Piece of debris caught in the slot got drug along for the ride while you were turning out the axle?

Or someone tried to thread the axle in the wrong side? I don't even know if that's possible.

Have you had the wheel off, shaft out before, and no one has touched the bike since then, so you know for a fact that this is new and was not there before. Sorry to ask questions with answers that will seem totally obvious to you but this would appear to be a bit of a mystery.

This is the first time i have had it off. First new tires i put on the buell. So as far as i know i was the only one to take them off.

Like i said it didn't come out easy but i didn't noticed the threading like that until after i tried to put the rear wheel back on. I just cant see how it happened. It looks like it is suppose to be there. I don't know if it was scored up a bit when i took it out. and then i just made it deeper putting it back in i am not really sure exactly what happened.

I can honestly say i have never seen this happen on any of my bikes or to anyone else.

Only other thought is to use something like J B weld to fill the "thread" and ream the hole true, I would not recommend this as a permanent fix but...

well Erik Buell Racing has swing arms for 300$ if worst comes to worst. But i gotta say i am downright confused on how this could even happen.

It is possible the wheel was removed at the dealer before delivery, possibly to preform a recall or possibly to borrow a part to get another rider on the road.

Because of the gap which allows the pinch bolt to do its job, the only way I would expect to see this is damage to the shaft, a contaminant would not get past that gap and be able to continue in such a uniform pattern, inspect the shaft carefully, the swing arm metal is soft. If you do find an answer to this please let us know.
Good luck.

Don't worry about it. Its meant to be there. They just did't use it. Notice the lefthand thread sign next to it.

I'm about to put my wheels back on. I remember thinking to myself how much fun this will be putting the belt back on. I plan to get the axle started before putting the belt on, there's enough play with that indent in the axle.
Did you have the belt on while starting the threads?

I expect the shaft is meant to fit "free" and be bolted up from the right hand side then pinched on the left. This way the swing arm is not distorted at all by the axle.

Belt was off. I tried to get the wheel to Line up with the belt on but I couldn't get it. I was doing it alone though so holding the wheel up and trying to worry about the belt was a pain. I never tried to tighten it the first few times. I couldn't get it to line up.

Put the original tires back on. Reinstall the axle/wheel. Take it to the dealer and pay them to swap the tires.

Well let me say this, I went down a little while ago, and hit it the the dremel, smoothed it out pretty well. Tested it with no wheel.

Here is what i found. I got halfway through the part i sanded. And it started scraping. Ok normal there is probably a little difference from the sanding. So i sand the rest and it works perfectly.

So i don't know what the deal was. I will still probably by a new swing arm. I couldn't sell the bike to someone knowing that there could be a problem i can deal with it but if i ever get rid of it i would like it to be perfect.

That is odd looking, possibly a mistake at the manufacturer, ie. threaded the wrong side of the swing arm.

I removed my rear wheel and forgot to loosen the pinch bolt. I was even able to line up the axle/wheel with the belt on and got it to thread in. It wasn't until I was hitting 50 foot lbs, with the axle only half way in, that I realized what i'd done. I still didn't end up with your problem. Only damage was a little metal, outside edge, off the left side of the swing arm, which I see yours has as well.
