The bike: '01 M2L, 4,800ish miles (I know...I'm working on it). Been sitting the better part of a year. BONE-stock with the exception of the jetting (I want to say 45/180, nothing major), a race aircleaner (CF hamcan), and Kuryakyn voltmeter. Stock muffler and header.

Fresh battery last week.

Fresh fuel last night.

Ran fine today, and on the long way home tonight (~65 hard, aggressive, mountain-road miles). For the most part.

First off, it feels kinda flat in the upper RPM range (4k+). Not sure if it's the lack of a race kit (exhaust/ignition), or if it's the M2 cam profile (it pulls like a freakin' TRAIN down low)...or if its a problem with fueling. Been too long since I spent a lot of time on a stock tuber, much less an M2 with those torquey cams.

Second - I can cruise at 4k rpm no problem. But if I crank on it at that RPM, and put a load on it (i.e. pulling a grade)...the tach starts bouncing like an EKG needle. The engine doesn't hiccup or anything like that...but it does feel flat like I mentioned above. Not sure if I should chase ignition box...wiring...VOES...? Voltmeter is 14v the whole damn time, not a flicker.

Lastly - on the way home, running a GREAT road and FINALLY without a cager moron in front of me holding me up....it cuts out. Dies. Out of fuel. 55 miles on the tank. Flip to reserve, fires up. Flip back to main...and it keeps running, all the way home, like nothing happened.

My guess is, crap in the petcock, either in the valve or in the screen. So, gonna run the rest of this tank out and pull the valve, and see what sorta crap is growing in there.

Any guesses or suggestions? I've already checked for intake leaks (none), set the idle, got the choke adjusted, throttle/idle cables are fine and the fuel line is a year old. I pulled the carb myself, cleaned it (including that freakin' float bowl needle that's a bear to get to!), set the screw 2.5 turns out, and reinstalled. Jets are clear, acc pump and diaphragm are fine, throttle blade opens 90 degrees at WFO...just like it's supposed to.

I'm leaning towards either demonic possession, or it's just being pissy and wants attention (and miles!).

Gas air and spark are all you need. You've pretty much done the gas part so look at spark, coil and wires come to mind. Timing cup can cause weird problems like this. Air filter is easy to change also.

Best of luck

Sorry, forgot to mention plugs, wires are a week old as well. Coil tests fine, but will doublecheck the connections. Loose signal wire could cause a lot of this.

I'll check the timing cup. Need to replace those cover rivets with 10-24 screws anyway LOL

Joe,
Don't forget to check your gas tank vent. A lot of the same symptoms.

Ya, I had the vent thing happen on my S1W. Flipping the petcock never "corrected" it, I always had to pop the cap...but I'll give it a shot.

Joe,

Could you be experiencing problems from contamination in your float bowl?

A bit of dirt below the main jet could intermittently block the main jet and cause the symptoms you described.

Good luck.

Also make sure the gasket between the ham can and the carb isn't blocking one of those little vents... This was a common problem on the forcewinders. Not sure if it can happen on the ham cans, but something to check.

I'd clean out the tank and petcock and (sorry!) carb again to know it's all clean, then put in fresh new gas (not the stuff you pulled), and see if it is better just to make sure you don't chase shadows).

Yeah, that's my plan. Unfortunately.

But I'm not going to *pull* any gas. I plan on running it out - might as well use it for its intended purpose, LOL

I pour the old gas in my push mower (even the old 2 stroke mixed stuff). It'll burn anything, and mowing with the smell of Klotz castor oil makes it feel like I am mowing faster! : )

If it makes you feel better, in my quest to dial in the jetting on various two strokes (never tell your friends you can jet a two stroke, or they will just keep showing up in your garage) I have probably literally pulled and reinstalled a carb 100 times this year.
