Holy CRAP! I just got back from a ride with my new tall seat. I am so effen happy O.k. back up...Ive been wanting a Ulysses since 06 when I sat on one at the bike show here in Seattle. It fit me perfectly and I loved how comfortable it was. Too bad I never had the money. Ive been riding since I was 11 on dirt bikes then to street bikes then I bought a Harley, rode it for 7 years and sold it for a down payment for a house. Fast forward to Oct 15 2009. I was so disappointed and I knew I couldnt go with never having a Uly so I saved my money and started looking. In April of this year I found a 09 Ulysses XB12XT for $7200 with 2500 miles on it. Racing red (the fast ones). I bought the XT because all of my friends all ride Ducatis (ST4S, Monsters and Multistradas) and I liked how the XT stacked up. Its also funny to see their faces when I fly by them in the corners...and they think theyre soooo cool. Anyways I LOVE everything about my bike except the low seat was miserable. Ive put 5500 miles on the bike so far and cant stand that seat! So last Monday I entered a Local top chef competition down in Oregon and won! Got a trophy and $100.00, took the money and rode home. Ended up being a 400 mile day and my ass hurt so fricken bad that I got home and spent my winnings on a brand new tall seat. Well it got here today and I went on a 100+ mile ride and Holy CRAP! What a great seat! Im so much higher, I have more room to the footpegs (no more cramping at the knees) all around better ergonomics. Almost like the bike should have come with that seat to begin with...oh wait it did. So I wanted to share that with all of you. Ive spent a lot of time on here but dont post much. This is an invaluable resource of info and I appreciate it greatly. Thank you all! By the way I am 5'9' 185 and 42 yrs dumb. |

You left out the most important information ! What did you cook to win ? I use the tall seat for my distance rides, and the standard '07 seat for commuting. |

hahaha, yeah, sorry. It was a black box competition against other local Chefs. Black box meaning the box is full of ingredients that you have to use or points are deducted, but you dont know whats in there till you start. We had one hour to complete the entrees for the judges. Ingredients were; airline chicken breast ling cod raisins chipotle peppers roma tomatoes squash raisins baby bok choy a peach zucchini thyme parsley orzo pasta I came up with lemon and garlic chicken over herbed orzo pasta with sauteed baby bok choy and a pan seared ling cod with a warm peach chutney garnished with zucchini and squash confetti. |

"airline" chicken breast? Please enlighten me. |

airline chicken is a breast with the wing still attached, hence "airline", kind of trendy last couple years. (Message edited by lloydxt on September 20, 2010) |

I'm 5'8" 135 lbs and have been considering a tall seat, even though I can barely touch both toes down with the standard XT seat. What about heat under the seat? Any noticeable improvement with all that extra material between your ass and the rear head? |

Any noticeable improvement with all that extra material between your ass and the rear head? I stand 5'8 as well. I have both the tall (standard '06 seat) and a low seat. The tall is considerably more comfortable, and I wasn't bothered by the engine heat at all. It also fit the bike perfectly, popping off or on securely with no fiddling at all. By contrast, the low seat (which I think is actually different than your stock seat) is like sitting on a steel plate, has an uncomfortable slope, allows the rear cylinder to cook my ass, fits very poorly against the frame allowing a lot of heat to pour through the gaps, and seems to be making contact with my ECM. Either seat is a one-foot-down affair for my 30" inseam, but the low seat gives me one flat foot vs one tip-toe with the tall seat. The profile of the low seat also allows me to slide a cheek off to get some extra leverage when I need to put the bike in reverse. The tall seat requires I get off of the bike and push it. It is enough of a difference that I ride with the miserable low seat nearly 100% of the time, now. If the bike didn't have so many charming qualities, I'd have probably gotten rid of it by now and gotten a machine that fits me better. I wonder if someone is any good at modding these seats so I can have my cake and eat it too! |

Lloydxt, I have a 2008 XT and just did the same mod as you. Did a 250+ mile ride this weekend and the tall seat is a night & day difference. However, I did notice that the tall seat impedes your ability to really hang off the bike in corners. So, just like Florida_lime, I'll still keep my standard for the shorter canyon rides. |

Just got back from another ride and I love my new seat. I still get the hot right leg but no cooking of my ass, I did the comfort kit no flash (stuffed it in) few months back so I cant remember how hot the stock xt seat got from back jug. One thing I have noticed is I could always tell when my nose hairs got long cuz the vibrations from the stock xt seat were so bad that I would literally have to itch my nose all the time. Not at all with tall seat, I felt half the vibrations I was used to. (Message edited by lloydxt on September 21, 2010) |

@ Ft_bstrd: Do you happen to have a tall seat with orange on the back? Please PM me if you do. I love the tall seat I got recently from another BW'er but my bike is a little slower now with the all black seat. |

Ft_bstrd if you have the 2008 and above tall seat without the horizontal seam running the length of the seat I am interested. |

Fatty, for some reason I cannot pm you. I am looking for a tall seat for my '09. How much are you asking? |

Those low seats are a better contraceptive than a Trojan. The heat and pressure would sterilize even the most virile. |

I'm on an '08 Uly and use both the tall & short seats keeping the tall seat in place almost always. Since someone mentioned heat, I've got to ask (though it's probably well covered in another string) if anyone has good suggestions to overcome the hot thigh. I've got the rider comfort kit installed and the pipes are wrapped. I haven't had the ECM remapped. Any suggestions? |

Godspeed2k10, did you put a bit of weatherstrip where the seat and airbox sit atop the frame. Used simple 'D' shaped stuff with the adhesive on the flat side of the 'D'. Was by far the best heat reducer I've done. Cheap, simple and stops that flow of really hot air (only found it happening at certain speeds) that cooks the thigh. |

Godspeed2k10, What Tiltcylinder said, PLUS, get the ECM remapped with the new fan logic. Having that fun run all the time above 15 mph does wonders for the amount of heat reaching the rider. |

+1 to Tiltcylinder's suggestion. An alternative to accomplish the same thing is to remove the seat and airbox cover and cover the frame openings above the rear cylinder head with adhesive-backed aluminum HVAC tape. Either one works well. |

Thanks much...you're awesome. Should be no problem to implement any/all 3 of the suggestions. I'm on the way to Barber for the week-end and will plan to do the weather strip tonight. There may not be enough time to properly do the aluminum HVAC tape option tonight...maybe I'll just tape my thigh for the trip Thanks again! |

Delta, I think I have buyers for the two that I have. I have one that was originally orange an the PO painted the tail black. It's rough. Would be a good base/padding for a seat cover job. Maybe a job for Baldwin. If any of you guys are looking for a seat base to work from with good padding but ready for a recover, let me know. |

I did the exact same thing with mine. The XT stock low seat looks like it would be comfortable, but it's pretty horrible. I tried an Airhawk, but it makes me feel unstable. I was close to getting a custom seat made, but for $90, I thought I'd try the tall seat. I'm 6'0 and about 230. HUGE difference. This is one of the best seats I've ridden on - almost as good as my Russell on my old bike. I did a 425 mile day two weeks ago with no issues at all. For the price, you can't do better. |
